Album Review
Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were remarkable craftsmen from the start, as Steely Dan's debut, Can't Buy a Thrill, illustrates. Each song is tightly constructed, with interlocking chords and gracefully interwoven melodies, buoyed by clever, cryptic lyrics. All of these are hallmarks of Steely Dan's signature sound, but what is most remarkable about the record is the way it differs from their later albums. Of course, one of the most notable differences is the presence of vocalist David Palmer, a professional blue-eyed soul vocalist who oversings the handful of tracks where he takes the lead. Palmer's very presence signals the one major flaw with the album — in an attempt to appeal to a wide audience, Becker and Fagen tempered their wildest impulses with mainstream pop techniques. Consequently, there are very few of the jazz flourishes that came to distinguish their albums — the breakthrough single, "Do It Again," does work an impressively tight Latin jazz beat, and "Reelin' in the Years" has jazzy guitar solos and harmonies — and the production is overly polished, conforming to all the conventions of early-'70s radio. Of course, that gives these decidedly twisted songs a subversive edge, but compositionally, these aren't as innovative as their later work. Even so, the best moments ("Dirty Work," "Kings," "Midnight Cruiser," "Turn That Heartbeat Over Again") are wonderful pop songs that subvert traditional conventions and more than foreshadow the paths Steely Dan would later take.

I FREAKING LLLLLOVE THIS BAND
by willdabeestMy god, who could get tired of these guys? :) Not like that crap rock that comes on every day that you get sick of listening to a minute into the song. I have had steely's album aja for more than 5 years and I STILL listen to it, it's that good. Not like 20 songs on a corporate rock band's album that sound the same. That is simply why quality ALWAYS beats out quantity. If these guys were popular now like they were 30 years ago, maybe some of he kids my age (18) and younger would realize the radio DOESNT PLAY GOOD MUSIC ANYMORE (mostly). Steely would be considered a god in the rock genre if it wasn't for the new trends that started the crappiness of today's music. Don't get me wrong...they already are gods if you've even HEARD about them. These guys pioneered a legend and they deserve recognition for it, and I am sad that bands like these are only part of trends and don't last as long as Michael jackson's albums.
What a debut
by solohansSteely Dan's debut album is very, very good. I listened to this recording over and over again in college and it really affected my musical tastes because I actually did not like the Steely Dan 'sound' at all growing up. But the key to becoming a fan of Steely Dan is to keep listening because at first the Dan's music does not seem to have a melody to the untrained ear. I'm glad I didn't give up on Steely Dan because I find it to be very enjoyable music infused with thoughtful lyrics. I became first acquainted with this album due to the airplay of 'Do It Again' and 'Reelin' in the Years.' Anyone would enjoy that catchy tune, but Steely Dan evolved into something more jazz-oriented and polished. The latter Dan is excellent, of course, but you really have to dig into Steely Dan's origin's. I recommend this album and 'Countdown to Ecstasy' and then move on from there. There's some excellent guitar work here as well. Give it a try and don't depend on the 30 second preview. Recommended: 'Midnight Cruiser' and 'Turn that Heartbeat over Again.' Of note: Donald Fagen shares vocal work here as he did in 'CTE.'
Official reviews not so official
by rexsaliusAll I can say is that I'm thoroughly underwhelmed by the "official" reviews on almost all the Steely Dan albums.
