iTunes Review

The number of the beast (that’s 666, kids) is recounted; the martial rhythms of metal are instituted; and singer M. Shadows incorporates as many of the techniques of emo and screamo as he can jam into these 11 tracks. For their third album, Huntington Beach, California’s Avenged Sevenfold aren’t exactly giving a history lesson in heavy metal, but they have learned quite a few tricks of the genre. There’s the epic scope of their seven-plus minute compositions (and there are four of those here) where they counterbalance their merciless assault with atmospherics that suggest one day they will “mature” to mainstream accessibility. (Don’t laugh, it happened for Metallica.) There’s also the steamrolling passion of their shorter tunes (the economical five-minutes of “Burn It Down”), proving that AS are jacks of all metal trades. Guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates obviously know how to employ a twin-guitar attack – even if it is occasionally blurred by cellos or the occasional ballad.

I agree with Nus4au2. This is a great album, though not as good as Appetite for Destruction. But it is stil one of the best albums in the world right now. These guys really pull it off, and anyone who thinks its a waste of time, at least listen to Bat Country. That should change your mind.

This album is really good. I personally like Beast and the Harlot, Bat Country, and Seize the Day. To me, those are the top three songs. I have liked A7X for a while and they are still good as they have ever been and this album will stay a classic for years to come.
