iTunes Review

The Beach Boys were a changed band after Pet Sounds. Leader Brian Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown while working on its follow-up, the never quite completed Smile (though Wilson did release an updated version of his proposed masterpiece in 2004). Meanwhile, the group searched for an identity that would translate for the ‘70s music scene and segue appropriately into their own middle age. The results are albums that exist in their own orbit, less beholden to trends and enticingly rich in their musical pursuits. 1970’s Sunflower was much more of a group effort. Dennis Wilson and Bruce Johnston contributed several key tracks (“Slip on Through,” “Tears in the Morning”) and the sound is uniformly warm, mature and adventurous, utilizing the group’s capacity for unusual harmonies. 1971’s Surf’s Up was darker and weirder. Brian Wilson’s “’Til I Die” is an unsettling composition alluding to his need to drop out of society, while Mike Love’s “Student Demonstration Time,” an R&B vamp based on the Leiber-Stoller songbook, makes an awkward yet engaging attempt at social relevance. The title track, written with Van Dyke Parks back in 1966 and intended for Smile, is an enchanting time trip back to the early days of psychedelia.

Along with Brian, the other 2 brothers steered the ship in his absence to a few wonderful albums in the late 60s and early 70s...Sunflower is a gem!

Surf's Up a great album even if you *don't* love the Beach Boys

Slap on your headphones and prepare yourself for a treat--I traded this album to a girlfriend back in high school and I must have been insane. It's just that good. I reserve judgement on "Sunflower"--I keep falling asleep before I hear all of it. Not that it's bad--it's just relaxing.

Surfs Up was originally released as a stand alone album. Manic depressive, dark and hopeful, combination of social commentary songs, and pain (?), amazingly woven songs. In my opinion it was better than Pet Sounds. The Sunflower additions are pretty pappy. So I recommend to only download the songs off of the original Surfs Up portion of this combined album including DGNtWater, LPRoad (a must), TaLoYFeet, DGirls (a must), SDTime, FFlows (a must), LaTommorrow (a must), ADiTLoaTree, TIDie (a must), SUp (a must).

Beginning their career as the most popular surf band in the nation, the Beach Boys finally emerged by 1966 as America's preeminent pop group, the only act able to challenge (for a brief time) the overarching success of the Beatles with both mainstream listeners and the critical community. From their...
