Album Review

This debut outing by French techno craftsmen Fabrice Dumont, Stephan Haeri, and Christophe Hetier is a lounge lizard's idea of heaven. Among the many intriguing elements stitched between the subtle dance beats are sultry female spoken-word snippets and seductive melodies provided by Peaches and Chilly Gonzales and gravel-voiced Scottish chanteuse Angela McCluskey of Wild Colonials. The overall vibe is predominantly mellow and the arrangements ooze sophistication via jazz chord voicings, an occasional upright bass sample, and odd time signatures. Cuts such as "Dance Me" will please the hardcore disco set and "Da Hoopla," featuring guest vocalist Soda Pop of Dirty Beatniks, emerges an obvious nod to the hip-hop nation. "Let's Go Again" melds acid jazz and acid rock with a repetitive bass motif, distorted guitar riffing, and groovy sound blasts, culminating with muted trumpet licks (is that you, Miles Davis?) on the coda. Genetic World contains a little something for every music fan, which, in this case, is a good thing.

Customer Reviews

'Breathe' is a phenomenal song, the rest of the albulm..

I stumbled across the song "Breathe" awhile back and thought that a song so well arranged and beautiful must be apart of an equally beautiful cd. I gave this CD a rating of 2 stars because the rest of the CD is nowhere near the same quality as the song "Breathe." This CD tries to hard to be the framiliar "techno-pop" that deters most people from listening or exploring techno. Lyrics from "Breathe" are blended into almost every track on the CD, which gives it a journey-like effect, but only if the listener is able to endure the annoying lyrics on the rest of the albulm. My recommendation is to download "Breathe" and "Smile." "Love can.." and "Yesterday was.." are decent tracks, but stay far far far away from "Dance Me" "Da Hoola" "Trishika"and "L'incertitude D'heisenberg", which has 3 minutes of dead air at the end of the track.

Breathe: Not It's Only Hit

Nearly every review here has dropped 'Breathe' as it's only hit. But hear me out: don't just buy the one track. Or the extended mix.
True, 'Breathe' is probably the best track on here. But, there are some that hit almost the same quality.
That was my problem too, how I bought Breathe and then expected the rest of the album to follow that same pattern. This is truely a great album, though the issue with Telepopmusik is that they're stuck between making chillout music and dance music, while still keeping the same Telepop sound. While tracks like 'Dance Me' and 'Da Hoopla (Sodo-Pop Remix' aren't BAD, they're plain offsetting to the slow, nearly crooning joys of the rest of the album. Much like Fischerspooner and freezepop evolved on New Wave/Synth Pop sounds of the 80's, 'Telepopmusik' evolves on early 50's pop and Soulful Jazz, while turning a modernized-electronic cheek on the whole genre. Though the middle of the album seemed like it could have been put at the begining. If you want to save some money, pick up 'Breathe','Genetic World', 'Love Can Damage Your Health', 'Smile', 'Yesterday Was a Lie', and 'Breathe (Extended Mix'. If only the arrangement wasn't so akward, I could award it a Five.
Highly reccomended for any Chill Mix.

Great Album

The song "Breathe" is one of the best chill music I have heard in my entire life. The ambience is subtle, feel like you are living by the spring and you are breathing a surge of fresh air. You need to have this song in your set of great music.
