Album Review

Wire's first new full-length effort in eight years, The Ideal Copy is a stunning comeback picking up where 154 left off while also reflecting the strides made by the members' solo work. Finding its footing in dark, edgy dance rhythms and ominous digital textures, The Ideal Copy is experimental and forward-thinking, spanning from the buzzing melodies of "Ahead" and "Ambitious" to the taut minimalism of "Feed Me"; the record has its flaws, but its restless creative spirit and refusal to rest on past glories make it one of the few reunion efforts that actually matters.

A Post-Punk Classic

by Apollo3000

I was in High School when this album was first released and I loved it. This album is quite a departure from Wire's early punk sound so don't expect to hear Pink Flag or Chairs Missing. Instead, The Ideal Copy has a more melodic almost New Order-ish sound to it, but done in a way that only Wire could do. Tracks like Ahead, Madman's Honey, Ambitious, Cheeking Tongues, Still Shows, Over Theirs and A Serious of Snakes are absolutely brilliant. A must have if your a fan of 80's alternative music. And for all you young kids who are fans of Interpol, The Killers, Editors and all the new "indie" bands, check this album out and see how it was done back in the day.

Under-rated record by overlooked band

The early wire trilogy (recently released in a historical box set) really was a hard act to follow! Point of collapse begins and wire are back where they left in 154 only mature and elegant enough to dissapoint the croud that thought these gentlemen where young angry punks. No question wire is an art project broader than a punk or new wave rock band. Their solo trajectories are so experimental that it's out of print or hard to find. Every wire member has a personal musical exploration outside the band. Wire is really an overlooked band but today these albums sound more contemporary and make more sense than ever. Of course songs like "outdoor miner" or "Kidney bingos" are universally beautyful (c'mon Itunes do your homework) I agree with some who claim Wire is the most inteligent rock group of all times. Their first albums are classics and Ideal copy certainly is on the "wire great albums" list.

One Of My All-Time Faves!!

Wire has been a major influence and inspiration to me since I first heard the Pink Flag lp back in the early 80's. When The Ideal Copy came out it was much different from anything I had heard at that time. I had the cassette since it came out and I originally heard AHEAD on the Enigma Variations 2 compilation (86 or 87). Ahead was on every mixtape I made back in the late eighties. Drill, A Serious Of Snakes, and Cheeking Tongues have stuck in my head after all these years, "Were you there? It's all...history".

Biography

Formed: 1976 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Wire emerged out of the British punk explosion but, from the outset, maintained a distance from that scene and resisted easy categorization. While punk rapidly became a caricature of itself, Wire's musical identity — focused on experimentation and process — was constantly metamorphosing....
