iTunes Review

As if to underscore the sincerity of his taste for gothic atmosphere, Trent Reznor recorded NIN's second full album in a home studio that occupied the same L.A. hillside residence where the infamous Sharon Tate murders had been executed by the Manson family a quarter-century earlier. But there was considerably more to Reznor's music and persona here than such a hype-ready angle might indicate. Suffused with a palette of sonic textures and a dynamic range that were rare in industrial music, Reznor conjures one of the genre's touchstones here, a 1994 album that spawned the dark, sexually charged "Closer," which quickly became NIN's resilient breakthrough hit. The single "March of the Pigs" also underscores the unlikely pop sensibility that lurked beneath Reznor's patent sturm und drang, another key to his becoming one of the '90's most challenging rock icons.

One of the best albums of all time.

Easily the best Industrial album of all time. Trent is clear on his vision of a perfect uptopian concept, complete with neatly dressed and uniformly perfect beats, obidient noise, and the power of his voice as a leader of the direction of modern music is unstoppable. Das good.

It seems many were peeved that this was a partial album for the longest time. That makes absolutely perfect sense. I don't know why iTunes even does that.
It's especially crappy for albums such as this one. Start to finish, The Downward Spiral is a true work of art, almost playing like a concept album. Melodic motives stated early in the record come back later, different. The best example of this is the title track starting off with an acoustic guitar playing the same melody from the end of "Closer". It may be just a little nuance, but it definitely makes this album feel wholly connected from beginning to end. This album is Trent Reznor's finest hour, without a doubt one of my all time favorite albums.

Oh, and I don't like that iTunes has started charging $1.29 for certain songs on an album. I bet albums selling for $9.99 will change , too. I mean, some albums already sell for $11.99, and I think that price will become commonplace in the near future.

Nine Inch Nails were the most popular industrial group ever and were largely responsible for bringing the music to a mass audience. It isn't really accurate to call NIN a group; the only official member is singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, who always remained solely responsible for...
