Album Review

George Clooney's 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck is set in New York City during the '50s, and the director decided the right music to go with the black-and-white cinematography was jazz. More specifically, current recordings from vocalist Dianne Reeves and a small combo featuring some silky smooth tenor and alto sax from Matt Catingub, Peter Martin on piano, and Jeff Hamilton on drums with Robert Hurst and Christoph Luty splitting bass duties. The tunes are mostly classic ballads and smoky standards (all picked by Clooney) that Reeves and the group handle with a satisfyingly light touch. She gives the songs plenty of emotion but never over-sings, lending the recording a very intimate feel. Also helping with that is the sound of the album as it's free from any modern studio trickery or gloss; in fact, much of the music on the soundtrack was recorded live during the shooting of the movie. Had Clooney chosen songs actually recorded in the '50s, the soundtrack may have been more authentic, but Reeves and her group do a commendable job of re-creating the simple and sentimental sound of the era's mainstream vocal jazz.

I love this album (and the movie), and though I think the iTunes review is a good one, I take exception with its closing critique of Clooney's choice to use contemporary recordings. The review said, "Had Clooney chosen songs actually recorded in the 50's,the soundtrack may have been more authentic..." What this neglects is that these are standards, not songs written after the 1950's. Jazz has always been about reinterpreting the standards, mostly writtten between the 1920's and the 1960's when they regrettably began to die off. Even though the songs were recorded in the present day, and using some of our best contemporary jazz musicians I might add, that does not diminish their authenticity. If anything, the musicians strove to a very high degree to replicate the sound of the age, especially Dianne Reeves' obvious influence from Sarah Vaughan, a key vocalist of the period. Whenever jazz musicians today are paid for their immeasurable talent and virtuosity to make such recordings, I support it, and do not think that filmmakers or anyone else should be criticized for doing it.

I like Dianne's sweet, melodic voice; but that's just it, it's TOO sweet.
I'm old school and like an edge, a story to tell behind the delivery of the lyrics, the kind of thing you found in the immortal Billie,Sassy and Dinah.
Of course none of the new singers have come close to those legends; but I keep hoping that someday............

For those who don't know Reeves has many more accomplishments than just the albums. She sang at the closing ceremonies of the 2002 Salt lake City Olympics, she was artistic director (or artist in residence maybe) for the LA Philharmonic (?) for a short time. She is the one of the best improvisational "scat" vocalists out there. Truly amazing. Listen to her self titled album - Dianne Reeves (esp. Better Days]. She also has a much faster version of How High the Moon on one of her older albums.

Biography

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Dianne Reeves has been one of the top singers in jazz ever since the late '80s. A logical successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae (although even she can not reach the impossible heights of Ella and Sarah Vaughan), Reeves is a superior interpreter of lyrics and a skilled scat singer. She was a...
