Album Review

Composer David Julyan (Insomnia, Memento) infuses director Neil Marshall's caving expedition thriller with taut passages of brooding paranoia and wistful odes to lives lost among the nocturnal beasts that were their prey. Bookended by a wistful theme that channels both the wistful ache of Angelo Badalamenti and the elegiac thoughtfulness of Michael Kamen, Julyan understands tension, dynamics, and minimalist dread like a true professor of the paranormal.

Great Score

by Stalingrad1

This is a really great movie and album. David really captures the loneliness and isolation in this story. The score begins by isolating the listener, and then it begins to draw out the raw emotion that accompanies the will to live. Only at the end of the score does it bring out an emotional climax of utter loss of all hope, and complete desolation. David’s orchestration is very unusual and gives the score a very unique feel, which makes it very memorable. This causes the effect of making the movie all the more retainable to the viewer’s memory. The brass playing at an interval of a fifth in the track (The Mountain) really expands the vastness of the mountains. It gives you a sense of the scale of the wilderness they are venturing into. The brass and keyboard in the track (Into the Cavern) gives you the sense of the mouth of the cave opening up and inviting you in. And the reoccurring theme that is most prominently utilized in the track (The Descent) is a very haunting and memorable motif, that is very effectively used being held back until this point of the score. This is a great movie with one heck of a soundtrack, all horror movie fans, buy the soundtrack and movie you will love it!

uncommon quality soundtrack for a horror movie

by mozollini

Within 5 minutes of watching, I knew this was going to be a scary, tragic and well crafted horror movie. Just from the soundtrack alone. David Julyan added depth to the movie before we, the viewer, had met any of the characters. Rare is the soundtrack that I go racing for, when the movie just ends.

Great Score!

I've been a fan of David Julyan for many years since his first score from the film THE FOLLOWING and this score is great very powerful. Great emotion through out all 20 tracks. David Julyan's score made The Descent what it is without his score the film would of been just another horror film.
