iTunes Review

Down to a trio (original bassist Markku Lappalainen left the band) since their previous release, The Reason, Hoobastank turns in an album with a leaner sound. That’s not to say they don’t still rock — they clearly do — but their approach has changed. Where their drumbeats were once plodding and pounding, they’re more nimble and dynamic here, and in the case of “Born to Lead,” deliver an unexpected four-on-the-floor dance beat. The still-catchy guitar riffs are less muscular than on prior releases, as the band moves closer to power chords and arena rock big choruses. They also pull off some convincing and well-written ballads in “Moving Forward” and “More Than a Memory,” both of which display the band's evolving softer side. They also bring a greater range of instruments to Every Man for Himself, most notably horns, keyboards, strings, and some acoustic guitar, giving an added depth to the band’s sound. Overall, it’s a more mature sound for Hoobastank, yet one which should still appeal to the bulk of their big fan base.

Well Worth the Wait.

by A New Desperate

I was waiting for this album, looking everywhere for this album, as soon as I got it, I sank into it. The first few tracks had my blood pumping, felt like starting something, just the way I like it. Yet in this same album, I felt somewhat heartwarmed, brought up old memories of mine. The music has grown and matured than the first album, an expansion in sound, I can't describe the value of this album. Overall, this album has meaning, but brings it with an edge.

Hoobastank's Best Album

Every Man For Himself is Hoobastank's third studio album (under Island Def Jam Records at least). After the departure of their bassist, their sound has dramatically changed. Many people ask "Is this the same Hoobastank as before?" and then give this album a 1 star review. But I can safely assure you that this change is better.

I've been a fan of Hoobastank ever since I first heard "Crawling in the Dark" a few years ago. You could even go as far as to say that they are my favorite band of all time. I loved their previous albums, Hoobastank, and The Reason, as well as the new one, For(n)ever, but I didn't get this album until recently. And what a mistake I made for not getting this album sooner.

Every song on this CD is excellent, and there is no filler tracks at all. Each song is great by themselves too, and I'm surprised that the singles didn't chart higher. Maybe the pop and rap addicted people of today couldn't understand the quality of this work. I feel as if this is a very underrated album, and deserves more love than it got. If you can't get every track on here, here are my top 5 favorite songs.

1. If I Were You
2. Without A Fight
3. If Only
4. More Than A Memory
5. Born To Lead

Special mention: The First of Me

But believe me, all the songs are awesome, so buy the entire album if you can.You should definitely get it right away, and immediately experience the wonder that is Every Man For Himself today (hey, it rhymes!).

Formed: 1994 in Agoura Hills, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

While the heavy alternative sounds of Tool and Alice in Chains were primary influences on Hoobastank's sound, the post-grunge quartet tempered the gloomier elements of such music with a suburban California groove and an eye for accessibility.
