iTunes Review

Years of often bleak lounge and club gigs had given "Piano Man" enough first-person edge to become his first significant hit, but Billy Joel finally crashed the big time in 1977 with this muscular commercial breakthrough, an album that still stands among his most confident and accomplished. If the collection's uber-slick signature ballad "Just the Way You Are" made him anathema to the nascent punk revolution, it nonetheless scored the ultimate Grammy honor as both Song and Record of the Year. Producer Phil Ramone brings out the latent '50s roots of songs like "Only the Good Die Young," while burnishing "Movin' Out" and the neo-classical melodicism of "She's Always a Woman to Me" to elegant perfection. There's a palpable edge to many of Joel's performances here; coupled with an ability to forge strong personas in his work that rivaled Randy Newman's, it's a collection whose best songs often blur the line between observation and autobiography.

His Masterpiece!

by KISS Fan '96

AC/DC had Back in Black, Michael Jackson had Thriller, Fleetwood Mac had Rumours and Billy Joel has the Stranger. This album is one that crosses over without selling out. He realeased it at the right time with the right mix of songs and it was a smash. As with many career defining albums, it has stood the test of time and changing musical tastes.

He had other albums that were as strong, perhaps 52nd Street or Glass Houses? But this one had ballads that were emotional, but not sappy (She's Got a Way and Just the Way You Are). It had complaints about life (Movin Out & the Stranger), and it had sexual desire and rebellion (Only the Good Die Young and Scenes....)

Other Joel albums can be avoided with the purchase of his greatest hits but this one is worth the investment for almost every listener.

It's perfect

I discovered this album lying on my moms desk a few years ago, and I immediately fell in love. From the infectious beat of Movin' Out, to the melodic, moving chord changes on Vienna, this album demonstrates that Billy Joel is one of the greatest rock pianists of all times. It is an absolute masterpeice; I would go as far to say that I would put it up there with Kind Of Blue on a list of the top 5 best albums ever. Just Beautiful

Although Billy Joel never was a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s. Joel's music consistently demonstrates an affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct...
