Mark Harris re-entered the Christian music arena with The Line Between the Two, his first solo release since leaving the popular quartet 4Him. Harris’ years with his former band emphasized tight vocal harmonies and broadly scriptural song topics. This time, he delves into his own life for subject matter, considering themes of individual mortality and family salvation in more specific terms. A maturing sense of passing time informs songs like “Hello To Goodbye” and the title tune, while “Find Your Wings” offers some loving wisdom to a child. Tracks like “Until” and “Carry The Light” invoke God’s omnipresence with a sense of wonder. Musically, the album favors a high-gloss pop sound with a hint of modern country, reminiscent at times of Rascal Flatts and Colin Raye. While “Ordinary Life” flexes some rock guitar muscle, most of the tracks here are sleek and Harris’ singing is clean-edged and earnest, particularly on yearning numbers like “Speak To Me.” The Line Between The Two begins to draw distinctions between Harris’ work with 4Him and his goals as a solo artist.
