iTunes Review

A band whose American fortunes never quite matched the resiliency of their sterling reputation in their native UK, the duo of Hull classmates Tracey Thorn (vocals) and songwriting multi-instrumentalist Ben Watt launched their career in the early '80s as jazz-smitten revivalists who covered Cole Porter and the Jam alike. But they were also shrewd enough to move beyond the new wave's fickle sense of nostalgia into a series of rewarding reinventions. Taking a tip from a successful club remix of their song "Missing" and more than a little inspiration from their 1994 dalliance with Massive Attack on Inspiration, this 1996 album boldly recast EBTG as contemporary techno trip-hoppers and found the duo as adept with electro-groove on the title track, "Single" and "Before Today" as they'd been with jazzy cabaret. It's a cool, welcome dose of humanity in a genre too often lacking in it.

A fantastic album from a stand-out group. I honestly don't think they can dissapoint. Measured grooves; the beats never get old. You can listen to this over and over, from dancing to driving.

This one never gets old even today. Where to start? Tracy’s amazing voice…the clever yet poignant lyrics…the amazing Ben? This album is an experience and it weaves a story of passion, love, heartbreak, emotion, loss, fear and reality. If you are drawn to this type of music you won’t be disappointed.
