iTunes Review

"All I ever wanted, all I ever needed, is here, in my arms," you whisper to her with twinkling eyes and a touch typically reserved for Faberge eggs. And then, suddenly... slap! Woops. You must be on a date with a recovering Depeche Mode fan, still prone to fits of rage when reminded how promising synth-pop seemed at the start of the '90s, back when the Brits released this, their undisputable masterpiece for the beaten, the broken, the melancholic masses who also happen to enjoy clubbing in the pale moonlight. Let's be honest: Even the lesser known survivors of this album are better than most of today's groove-riding mope music, from the whirring, windswept "Halo" — complete with what sounds like a snippet of Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole" — to "Policy of Truth," a swaggering single that rivals even "Enjoy the Silence" in retrospect. Not "Personal Jesus" though; it's on its own special plane, one inhabited by Ennio Morricone and a makeup-free Marilyn Manson.

Violator greatness

I started out with Policy of Truth via an iTunes recommendation, and was immediately addicted. I knew the lyrics within 2 days. That's when I downloaded the rest of the album. Achtung Baby by U2 is a good precursor to this; I think my extreme love of this album and countless listenings of it helped me properly appreciate Violator. I will definitely be looking at other music by Depeche Mode. Truly, truly beautiful, moving, haunting, melodic music. Once (or many times) heard, never forgotten.

I love "Violator," but this version of "Personal Jesus" is shorter than the CD original - disappointing!

The Album You MUST Listen To

by Lylat Foxes

in my opinion there are a few albums everyone must listen to at least once. "Violator" is one of them. It is the best-selling DM album to this day and I can see why. only nine tracks and yet they are all so brilliant.

There's no bad point on this album. NO BAD POINT. "World in My Eyes", "Personal Jesus", "Halo", "Waiting for the Night", "Enjoy the Silence", "Blue Dress" and "Clean" still get me every single time. This album is good enough to steal for, it's pure ecstacy.

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s. One of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, they began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but...
