Album Review
As long as Robin Guthrie is active, he's going to deal with one persistent issue. If he sounds like himself, he'll please a certain portion of his fans who want to be continually reminded of why they got into Cocteau Twins, while others will urge him to move on. It's the price he pays for shaping a specific sound that has been imitated by many. If he had started out sounding like a bunch of other bands, and continued to do something similar to that, album after album, he wouldn't catch nearly as much heat. Continental, his second solo album, is all-instrumental but not nearly as ambient as 2003's Imperial. Several tracks rise and crash with the help of programmed rhythms and leave enough room for the presence of vocals, while a couple others simply shift around and cascade. Unless you're a gear head and can tell exactly what was used to record this album, you might think it to be made of outtakes from recordings made in 1985 and 1986, when the Cocteaus released the Tiny Dynamine and Echoes in a Shallow Bay EPs, as well as the Victorialand album; the songs induce that peculiar mixture of isolation and ecstasy. In addition to fitting safely in the context of Guthrie's past work, the album also recalls the sandstorms of Scenic's Acquatica and the restful moments of Manual's Ascend, two albums that were undoubtedly informed in part by Guthrie's past. Depending on how much Robin Guthrie you want in your life, Continental is either redundant or another reason to love him. It's certainly a strong album.

Wish Upon a Star
For those who love the dreamy, etheral sound of "Victorialand"-era Cocteau Twins, you will not be disappointed with the lush and ambient starscapes Robin Guthrie has given us in "Continental," "Imperial" and "Everlasting", his recent solo recordings. It is true that these efforts are more of a re-establishment of his sound than a completely new style. Maybe he is the type of artist who will evolve more with collaborations with others... Could you just imagine if he made a recording with Lisa Gerrard? In any case, if you were going to stay up late on a beautiful summer night and watch the constellations, load this album up and press "repeat."
THE BEST ALBUM OF THIS PAST YEAR
This release is amazing. This a very emotional, epic, atmospheric piece of work. I have been a huge Cocteau Twins since the mid 80's and have to say this is probably better than their best work. It has been mentioned before, while Elizabeth Frazer's voice is the most angelic in the history of dream pop, it is not missed on this release. Not only will fans of dream pop love this, but ambient fans will embrace this cd. I am a big fan of ambient and have just about every important release, and I have to rank this one up there with the best in that genre. It could be said that Ulrich Schnauss (one of the best in the ambient genre) was heavenly influenced by Mr. Guthrie on his "Strangely Isolated Place" release. I also think Mr. Guthrie took some of Mr. Schnauss tricks to add to the ambience of this beautiful release. This is truly an instant classic!
so thrilled to "hear" a bit of the Cocteau again
I always thought it was Elizabeth's voice that enchanted me and made the Cocteau twins my favorite band of all time. I now understand it was both the music and the voice that was so ethereal and beautiful. I am so happy with Robin Guthrie's releases this year. I have followed his blog off and on and have always admired his skills in score and music production. This album is a pleasure to listen to and will transport you to a place of relaxation and timelessness.
