iTunes Review

With the addition of Gram Parsons, the Byrds took a definitive step into country music. The group had previously aired this side — Porter Wagoner’s “A Satisfied Mind” on their second album Turn! Turn! Turn!, “Mr. Spaceman” from Fifth Dimension — but they’d never completely submerged themselves into a single genre. Parsons wrote the two original compositions, his sublime signature tune regarding his southern upbringing “Hickory Wind,” and the upbeat pedal-steel driven “One Hundred Years From Now.” For the rest, the group recruited from all over. Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” and “Nothing Was Delivered” (which later appeared on his Basement Tapes), the Louvin Brothers’ “The Christian Life,” Merle Haggard’s “Life in Prison” and Woody Guthrie’s “Pretty Boy Floyd” were smart, informed choices but much out of sync with the rock mainstream of 1968 where psychedelia was winding down as sonic innovations from Jimi Hendrix and political unrest in the world at large were surfacing in the harder edge of the music. At the time, the album’s C&W direction doomed the band commercially. Years later, it’s considered one of the most influential albums of all-time, attracting new generations to explore the connections between rock and country music. Excellent outtakes featuring Parsons have been added to the subsequent reissues.

The father of alt.country

I was lucky enough to be given this album 12 years ago after seeing a Son Volt show and was instantly amazed. Jeff Tweedy to Ryan Adams owe their careers to Graham Parsons and I give the Byrds credit for letting him push their music in this direction. You won't be disappointed!

Awesome album!

I'll concede that I'm not much of a Byrds fan...or as least I wasn't...or even much of a country music fan. But after hearing The Flying Burrito Brothers and The International Submarine Band, I became a fan of Gram Parsons and decided to check out this album. I was not disappointed! The three album tracks with Parsons' vocals (as well as the bonus tracks) are incredible, from the sincerity of "You're Still On My Mind" to the almost insincere performance on "Life In Prison". The other tracks (sung by McGuinn and Hillman) are also very good, particularly the two Bob Dylan covers. One can surely appreciate the generous portion of bonus tracks, especially hardcore Parsons fans, as many of his vocals on the original album were replaced. This recording is essential listening for fans of The Byrds, Gram Parsons, and Country-Rock in general. I would recommend SAFE AT HOME by The International Submarine Band as a companion to it; both were seminal recordings in the country rock movement. Excellent album, 5 stars.

A Key Recording for Any Rock Historian

This record was a breath of fresh air when it came out. Almost singlehandedly, it set the direction for the fusion of traditional country and rock that even now, many years later, continues to drive the Red Dirt genre, much of what comes out of Austin, newgrass music, and so much more. McGuinn and Parsons are rightly given much credit for pushing this envelope, but Chris Hillman may be the most overlooked force in music today - still out there singing bluegrass today after a distinguished career marked with singular excellence.

Although they only attained the huge success of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys for a short time in the mid-'60s, time has judged the Byrds to be nearly as influential as those groups in the long run. They were not solely responsible for devising folk-rock, but they were certainly more...
