Album Review

The Best of Santana is a 16-track collection that greatly expands the scope of Santana's previous hits compilation, Greatest Hits. Drawing from the band's entire 30-year career, the disc contains such familiar items as "Evil Ways," "Jingo," "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen," and "Oye Como Va," but it also has a number of longtime favorites of the band and fans. Furthermore, all the songs have been subjected to Super Bit remastering, resulting in the best sound ever. For some casual fans, Greatest Hits remains definitive, since it's a portrait of the band at its peak, but listeners wanting a career-spanning single-disc compilation will find that The Best of Santana suits their needs.

Smooth?

You have to be kidding right? Smooth in the Best of Santana? Take a look at the release date. 1998. I don't think Rob Thomas was even born then. Ha.

Oh yea, love this album. GREAT collection. lost the cd and now I finally got it back via iTunes.

Best of Santana - Released 1998

I purchased this album after hearing Oye Como Va in a taxi cab...it is my favorite song on the album. Being younger, I did not grow up with any of these songs; however, I was surprised how many of these songs I have actually heard before. Some of them I would like to mention are Evil Ways, Black Magic Woman, She's Not There, No One to Depend On, and Hold On. There are several songs I had never heard prior to buying this album that I love as well...Bella, Dance Sister Dance. Europa, and Soul Sacrifice are some of my other favorites on this album. With this best-of collection, you get a lot of bang for your $9.99...16 tracks!!! For this reason, I recommend this Santans best-of above the others. I should mention that if you are looking for his newer hits, you will have to go with a different option, but this is a very solid album and well worth the purchase.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band's early personnel...
