Album Review

Much like Death Cab for Cutie, emo devotees were aghast with horror when Coheed and Cambria left the shores of their indie label to depart for the good islands of major labeldom. And for those just catching up on their Coheed and Cambria folklore, this is first part of two, which will be the conclusion to their four-part concept album saga detailing the saga of two protagonists, Coheed and Cambria. It's not necessary to know all of the facts and story lines to enjoy IV, which is a prog rock opera on par with anything that Rush or Queensrÿche ever released. But the interesting thing to listen for is the evolution of the group's sound, since success sideswiped the group with 2003's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth. The emo chords and songwriting dynamics have been shed in favor of a more prog rock, heavy metal sound that was so dominant throughout the '80s. Nowhere is this more evident than in the album's opener, "Welcome Home"; with its bombastic strings, dramatic buildups, breakdowns, and dual guitar solos, it's one of the best metal licks that 1985 never made. The album concludes with a four-part song cycle that acts as a subplot within the album, and will most likely act as a bridge for volume two when it's released. But conceptual plots aside, this is an album that finally lives up to the heavy metal promise and unapologetically delivers the goods with a full head of steam.

Keeping the Blade, 5
Really sort of masterful the way they combined album intros from their previous two.

Always & Never, 2 1/2
Easily my least favorite, mainly because of the annoying little kid sounds sort of ruining an otherwise good intro to the next song, which if you haven't heard yet, ohoho you are in for it.

Welcome Home, 5
One of the best songs on the album. Insane intro with a clean channel and then the drums and second guitar come in with a headbanging power chord. Luckily you get to hear it a few more times with squealies (you'll know what I mean). The lyrics make this song even better. "You could have been all I wanted, but you werent honest, now get in the ground!" Every riff in this song is great. Oh yeah, the solo...just listen to it, it's mind-blowing. The outro is great too, lots of "ooh's" to make sure you're singing along.

Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial), 5
A really upbeat song with great backup vocals throughout the verse and leading into the chorus. Great solo that fit's in with the rest of the song, not just there for the sake of showing off.

Crossing the Frame, 3 1/2
My second least favorite, but a lot of people I know like it..so maybe it's just me.

Apollo 1: The Writing Writer, 5
Awesome intro and verse riff. You'll find later it's pretty much the same song as a later one with different lyrics, and a few changes in arrangement. Awesome chorus.

Once Upon Your Dead Body, 4 1/2
Pretty funky song. A soft break from The Writing Writer. More good backing vocals. Awesome chorus.

Wake Up, 5
A love song for yah. Lyrics are great. Not too much to say.

The Suffering, 5
Ohjesus. Great song from beginning to start. Really upbeat song throughout. Really awesome backing vocals. And an unexpected change in chorus in the middle of the song.

The Lying Lies and Dirty Secrets of Miss Erica Court, 5
Soft, in the verse, but gets a bid louder in the chorus, which is great.

Mother May I, 3
eh.

The Willing Well I: Fuel For the Feeding End, 4 1/2
Awesome drum, guitar combination in the verse. Sort of offbeat...in a way. But it's not a bad thing (in the chorus). Get's pretty dark in the breakdown, with a pretty awesome double voice. Singing "Feed, little maggot off the westside of your sin..."

The Willing Well II: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness, 5
The title track...and my favorite. quick intro unlike the first Willing Well. Really upbeat riff and vocals in the verse, until it gets dark in the chorus for a second, then gets lighter, then darker again. It's pretty sweet. Another verse, which includes my favorite lyric by them "So I have a secret that no one should know, that I shouldn't tell. Baduhbadah! Budahbuduhwoah!" After the second chorus, lots of anticipation with a bunch of palm muted power chords. A few awesome phases including a few headbanger riffs, and a "woah" part. Overall an excellent song.

The Willing Well III: The Telling Truth, 5
As soon as it comes in, you'll realize it's pretty much the same song as The Writing Writer, but a bit longer. I think this is better, it allows for a progressive feel. There's some wierd lyrics in the breakdown, which leads back into the chorus. (Yes, I know it has to be there for the story) Not much else to say that hasn't been said in the Writing Writer review.

The Willing Well IV: The Final Cut, 4 1/2
Comes in with some great guitar riffs and what you might think will be soft lyrics. Hell no. Claudio's voice gets darker as the lyrics get darker. After that, two awesome guitar solos and then keyboards...and then a little silence...into a hidden track called Bron-Y-Aur. It's really pretty wierd. To tell the truth, I usually change the song after the silence.

Overall, insane album. Worth every last penny. If it cost $50 I would easily buy it anyway.

AWESOME ALBUM!!!

Gosh guys, leave these guys alone. They actually came up with a great album and great songs (including Welcome Home). All these haters need to back off and its really starting to "bleep" me off because 1) you have no taste in music 2) you are being WAY to judgemental over them. They did an awesome job and one of the best albums of all time.
