Album Review

These nine Midwestern boys (all from Des Moines, IA) perform wearing orange industrial coveralls with UPC symbols on the front; each bandmember is identified by a number, which is painted on the sleeve of his coveralls. Each also wears a really nasty-looking mask. Judging from their appearance and from the sound of their debut album, it's easy to assume that they're upset about something. What it is exactly is kind of hard to tell, since the stuttering roar of Number 8's vocals is barely discernible through the jackhammer death metal drums, massed guitars, horror-show samples, and jittery turntable scratches that pummel the listener through almost every song. You thought Limp Bizkit was hard? They're the Osmonds. These guys are something else entirely. And it's pretty impressive. Although those lyrics that are discernible are not generally quotable on a family website, suffice it to say that the members of Slipknot are not impressed with their fathers, their hometown, or most anything else. "Surfacing" starts out by cursing pretty much everything generally, and then it starts getting aggressive, as shrieking guitar feedback alternates with DJ scratching. "Spit It Out" is speed rap-metal with an actual melody in the chorus; "Scissors" ends the program with a sound that quite simply couldn't get any more aggro without falling apart entirely, and by the end, the singer actually sounds like he's about to burst into tears. An auspicious debut.

2. (Sic) 4.5/5 third favorite song on the album.

3. Eyeless 5/5 this song is tied for second on the album. Check out the intro!

4. Wait and Bleed 5/5 Eyeless ties this song and I think Wait and Bleed won by a little.

5. Surfacing 6/5 I can't decide between this song and Liberate for my favorite. They're both great. Though the guitar is quite simple the beat changes to make it rock! Check out the scratch solo!

6. Spit it Out 4.5/5 I like jammin to this song because it really gets my blood pumpin! A little to fast though.

7. Tattered & Torn 4/5 Good song. Very chilling and mysterious!

8. Me Inside 3.5/5 Okay song. Killer guitar solo near the intro!

9. Liberate 6/5 Sid Wilson, it's your time to shine. The beat goes right along with the scratching. I want to be a future starscream!

10. Prosthetics 3/5 Not one of my favorites. Still an okay SliPkNoT song.

11. No life 3/5 I think this song has very serious lyrics. It coudn't have done without. If you like Spit it Out, check it out!

12. Diluted 3.5/5 This song makes me feel dizzy and when I listen to it, I lose my mind!

13. Only One 3/5 I wonder what instrument that is in the intro?

14. Scissors 4/5 A long creepy song. The lyrics are very strange but thats what makes the song.

Biography

Formed: September, 1995 in Des Moines, IA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Slipknot's mix of grinding, post-Korn alternative metal, Marilyn Manson-esque neo-shock rock, and rap-metal helped make them one of the most popular bands in the so-called nu-metal explosion of the late '90s. But even more helpful was their theatrical, attention-grabbing image: the band always performed...
