Album Review

Recorded during the same time and issued on the same day as After the Night Falls, Before the Day Breaks is not radically different from its sister release. In fact, it might take a few plays of both discs to make some kind of distinction. They are equally meditative and engaging, based around heavy treatments of Robin Guthrie's guitar and Harold Budd's piano. The closer, "Turn on the Moon," is a relatively bombastic and overloaded piece involving a drum machine, crashing sonics, and even some added acoustic guitar from Guthrie. Otherwise, this follows the same format as After the Night Falls — all eerily comforting and equally suited for passive background listening and complete absorption. Cynics and casual fans will find these albums indistinguishable from one another and possibly the remainder of each artist's past. More attentive followers will know better.

amazing depth

Harold Budd is a name I hold very high, As I am a big fan of the late 70's collaborations with Brian Eno, and Robin Guthrie has really grown on me the last few years (I am NOT a big Cocteau fan). The song ' Turn on the Moon' reminds me of when I was a child, the magical feeling I would get watching the moonlight liquify on the Ocean in Rhode Island, I have always loved music like this, it's just very rare to find anyone who writes it this well. I highly recommend all of their work.

Perfect Ambient music you will indulge in

I barely became aware of the release of this album in early 2008 (it came out in mid-2007). Yet, since I found out about it, it's become a fixture in my iTunes playlist. The ethereal sound of Harold Budd (one of the early creators of Ambient music along with Brian Eno) blends in impeccably with the guitar work of Robin Guthrie (of Cocteau Twins fame) to yield an album that you will indulge in time and again.

Along with the companion After The Night Falls, this is an album you will find yourself listening in times of trouble and in times of joy equally, non-intrusive music that you can work to and write to as much as you can mellow to.
