Album Review
Welcome to the breath-robbing, heart-pounding Relationship of Command, an album many have been waiting for with red-faced anticipation since their last EP, the brilliant Vaya. On this 11-track masterpiece, so full of adrenaline and swarming moods, ATDI has created one of the most infecting and mind-blowing rock albums in a long time. While most of the tracks are of the more aggressive edge, this is undeniably the band's most focused and well put together and, therefore, best all-around album yet. "Quarantined" and "Sleepwalk Capsules" alone make this album worth purchasing: This music is seamless and inspiring. Electronic movements meshed into "Enfilade" stretch the texture of the album further, into the unique backup vocals of Iggy Pop on "Rolodex Propaganda." Amidst all the rock, there is the undeniably unique edge about ATDI's sound, something that has permeated through their music from the Hell Paso 7". Beautiful vocals bursting passion in quirky, abstract, and often thrilling lyrics, youthful energy, driving melodies, and a sense of beyond-the-moment urgency. Moving from Relentless to Grand Royal, as well as to the notorious and mostly infamous producer Ross Robinson, has not killed the band's spirit or sound, as many loyal fans feared it would in the pattern of Jawbreaker, Jawbox, among others. If anything, it has allowed the band to push themselves to new limits, to fulfill what they have been working for relentlessly for so long. This is not a band that could ever be insincere. You can see it in their eyes and feel it in their music and work ethic. ATDI is one of the saviors of true emotional straight-up rock!

Favorite Album Ever
by awrankinI only occasionally write reviews on iTunes, in times when I feel totally compelled to do so.
ATDI is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest bands of all time. "Greatness" is of course typically measured in impact and influence, and though this band is arguably one of the most influential of the '90s, they don't stack up in that regard to the big names, like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, etc. How then do I determine ATDI as being so great?
By their product, the music itself, when listened to alongside the work of all the most famous bands. And because ATDI really only produced one quality full-length album, you must compare Relationship of Command to the other widely recognized albums, such as the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, and Bob Dylans' Blonde on Blonde.
Once you have listened to the four albums the whole way through, think not to yourself "Which work greatly influenced the most subsequent musicians?" but instead "Which recording is still clawing in the back of my mind, demanding to be replayed?" The answer to the second question will undoubtedly be Relationship of Command. This album is by far the most infecting, genuinely emotional, and inspiring of the bunch. The sheer power of the music will put you in disbelief, and fill you with unspeakable feeling.
Yet very few even know ATDI ever existed. Theirs is probably one of the most regrettable break-ups in music history. If they had released another few comparable albums, we can only guess as to what wild directions alternative rock could have taken. The split produced two hugely inferior bands, The Mars Volta and Sparta, and while I listen to and enjoy them both, no work from either group has stacked up with ATDI. The closest either band has come to that feat, perhaps may have been TMV's first album, Deloused in the Comatorium. While this is a brilliant recording and a great example of progressive and experimental rock, it does not accomplish the same goal as Relationship of Command. It does not fill the listener with pure emotion; it does not bring the listener to new heights or really inspire them to anything at all.
I may seem like a bit of an ATDI fanatic. I am. The first time I heard their music, I couldn't stand anything apart from One-Armed Scissor, but the more I tried it, the more I like it, until I eventually bought the whole album. I now listen to Relationship of Command on a near-daily basis, and have trouble going on without it.
So I think it's clear that I want ATDI to get back together. Then I could live in peace.
