iTunes Review

Released in late 1996, Matchbox Twenty’s debut release Yourself or Someone Like You went on to sell over 12 million copies worldwide, making them one of the most popular rock bands of the late ‘90s. This wide appeal is easy to understand given the band’s emphasis on crunchy guitars, big choruses, memorable riffs and, most significantly, the impassioned vocals of Rob Thomas, the lead singer and principal songwriter. Thomas possesses a powerful voice that easily shifts from silky smooth to aching growl, and more than anything it’s his distinct vocals that give Matchbox Twenty their signature sound. Striking the right balance between studio polish and raw energy, the album is filled with catchy melodies that are easy to sing along with and the hooks to back them up. Most of the songs are up-tempo fist-pumpers, but there are a few slow burners that showcase the band’s softer side as well. Ultimately, Yourself or Someone Like You works well because it’s modeled on the kind of guitar-based classic rock that just doesn’t get old — particularly when it’s done this well.

Because no one has given this album a bad review, I feel that I must expose these guys for what they are. Bands come like this every decade: Pat Boone in the 50's, Chicago in the 70's, Bon Jovi in the 80's, and now Matchbox 20 in the 90's, (possibly Paramore in the 00's). These are bands that play it safe. The middle of the road music that these guys make is lowest common denominator pop/rock that just tries fit in with every other band out there. It's not ambitious, it's not original, it's not good. Making music that won't offend, stimulate, or think outside the (match)box, it goes for what everyone wants to hear and buy their records 12 million times over. Every good review all says that the songs still haven't gotten old, that's because their so bland they don't leave an impression at all. All my friends tell me they have never heard of this terrible band that I keep talking about, and tell them all the same thing: You've never heard of the band but a guarantee you've heard their songs. They're just so bland and derivative they sound like everyone else.

amazing album.
