Album Review

It's unlikely that this is the holiday album Jars of Clay would have created when they first started asking their record label for the chance. With the band's sound evolving from glossy alternative folk-pop to experimental synth rock, their approach to their first full-length Christmas record evolved as well. Other changes contributed, too. After 12 years, the band fulfilled its contract with Essential Records and parted ways, immediately setting up shop as an indie act under the Nettwerk umbrella. Frontman Dan Haseltine reported that the band had wanted to do a Christmas album ever since 1995's four-song EP Little Drummer Boy, but label execs kept it from materializing. The only limit to their creativity now, it seemed, was deciding how deeply to reach into the repertoire of traditional holiday music and how much original material to infuse. Thankfully, the quartet came up with just the right mix of old and new fare, all thickly coated in textured synth layers and drum loops. The result is a highly nontraditional treatment of holiday themes, though one that will suit fans of the band from almost any era.

One of the best!...?

by treasurefan

You can't argue that this is one of the coolest new xmas albums that have been released in a long time. You can seriously put it on and chill in fornt of the fireplace (which we have done!). I like the fact that they did a few traditional songs (however....made them sound SO NEW and enjoyable!) and they had some really good covers and original material all mixed in. AND go see them do the album live.....even better....saw them last year! Go Jars!! I'd like to say hey do another one....but don't do one just to do one. Let it came from the heart fellas!

Top of My List

This is my favorite Christmas album. Its mix of classic songs that have sometimes been changed to almost unreconizable conditions, along with a few new ones sprinkled in here and there. A welcome break from your average holiday tunes without being over-the-top pop.

Amazing Album

We won this album in a local radio contest, and it is now my absolute favorite Christmas CD we own!
The new takes on classic carols are wonderful! My favorites on the album would be "Drummer Boy" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". but "Christmas Time is Here" puts an amazing spin on the Charlie Brown Classic.
This album is completely worth it, unless you don't like a few of the slower songs, in which case i would recommend buying only the ones that are more upbeat, as a few on here stay at the same pace throughout the entire song.

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky...
