Unconventional format for great songs by indie favorites.
by gummygirlAn unconventional indie gem, "In Dog's Country" is a childrens musical written for adults. Performed by local NYC alternative musicians such as Matt Sutton and Ruth Keating (from the Brooklyn based Malarkies) and Rose Thomson from Babe the Blue Ox, it's a album that children can enjoy, but adults will appreciate. All performances are more then competent, but it's Billy Dechands complex yet catchy rhythms and emotive lyrics that really steal the show. Standout tracks: The lovely "The Night Is Dark and Cold" sung by Dechand and Thomson, "Here Boy" by Dechand, Keating and young performer Alex Zimmer, and the rueful "Been There, Done That" by Dechand. It's nice to see a performer attempt something beyond the requisite "eight track album with one hotshot single", and one hopes that "In Dogs Country" might get a chance to be performed again live. It's material certainly seems to warrant more attention than it has gotten: by being available more widely, one hopes that will change.
