Album Review

Cutting to the chase in a greatest-hits offering is always the best way to go. There's a reason this disc is called 22 More Hits, and that's because George Strait has laid out single after single after single since the early 1980s, and has become the most consistently top-selling artist in the contemporary country books. Strait continues to top polls, issue new albums, and tour with astonishing regularity and has ridden a wave that no one could have foreseen in this fickle industry. From "Amarillo Morning," and "When Did You Stop Loving Me," to "Don't Make Me Come Over There and Love You," and "If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger," they are all here. The inclusion of so many number ones on a single disc make this the de facto best-of in the catalog of this most impressive and consistent artist who embodies not only the tradition, but what's best about the contemporary sound as well.

Great deal

For $7.99 you can get all these songs! What a bargain!! Favorite here is "If You Can Do Anything Else" and what a message. It's soft. lovely and plain romantic. "Lovebug" is a great upbeat song as well. George Strsit is one of the ultimate best country singers today, so add this to your GS collection before the deal goes away.

Practically Perfect

George Strait truly has no equal. Alan Jackson comes close but can't rival his affable vocals, Garth Brooks had bigger hits but less raw talent, Toby Keith is a little too rough around the edges and comparisons to Kenny Chesney are simply laughable. Finally, a compilation that does George justice! This accompanying volume to his "50 Number Ones" is essential listening for any country fan: "Amarillo By Morning" is (in my not-so-humble opinion) the greatest country song of all time, a slightly maudlin cowboy's tale with the perfect balance of melancholy and optimism. "When Did You Stop..." is a worthy cut from the "Pure Country" soundtrack, and "Unwound" epitomizes everything that makes an upbeat honky-tonk tune worthwhile. "She Let Herself Go" yet again demonstrates George's uncanny ability to pick lyrically captivating songs, and "If You Can Do Anything Else" exhibits his easygoing, magnetic demeanor. While "Don't Make Me Come Over There..." forays slightly outside his realm of credibility and "Lovebug" could conceivably qualify as cheese, he more than redeems himself with the Texas cowboy love anthem "How 'Bout Them Cowgirls" and his longtime concert closer, the satisfyingly nostalgic "The Cowboy Rides Away."

Strait Fan "Must Have"

This album is the perfect compliment to his 50 #1's album. Included are two "How the heck did these not reach #1" songs "Amarillo By Morning" and "The Cowboy Rides Away". Don't miss the underappreciated "Desperately" and the snappy "Adalida". Good mix - excellent listen.

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Out of all the new country singers to emerge in the early '80s, George Strait stayed the closest to traditional country. Drawing from both the honky tonk and Western swing traditions, Strait didn't refashion the genres; instead, he revitalized them for a new decade. In the process, he became one of the...
