iTunes Review

More diverse and dramatic than its predecessor, Danzig’s second solo album finds him and Rick Rubin expanding upon the template of Danzig. Lucifuge (Latin for “shun the light”) delves deeper into the blues than ever before, turning a folk song into predatory fantasy with “Killer Wolf” and even incorporating a shuffling acoustic guitar into the slinky “I’m the One.” The power ballad “Devil’s Plaything” is about as close as Danzig ever got to the stadium riffs of late '80s metal, while “Long Way Back From Hell” and “Snakes of Christ” are fundamentalist, four-on-the-floor rockers that can stand alongside anything by AC/DC or Motorhead. Best of all is the disarming “Blood and Tears,” a break-up song done in the style of a 1950s R&B song, complete with sweltering organ. As a singer, Lucifuge finds Danzig in the best form of his career, filling out every note with his rich, barrel-chested baritone. After more than ten years in the music business Danzig was still exploring the parameters of his persona, and Lucifuge proved that there were more possibilities lurking in Danzig’s soul than anyone had previously thought possible.

My favaorite album of Danzig by far!

Here is an exert from an interview of Glenn Danzig describing the tracks on the album.(Whole Album start to finish the best! I give it 10 stars not 5!)

Glenn Danzig recently talked about the songs on Lucifuge, Danzig's second album on Def American Recordings, produced by Rick Rubin, and released in June 1990.

Long Way Back From Hell: "What happens when you're doing something you're not prepared to pay the consequences for. If it's too hot in hell, then don't sign up."

Snakes Of Christ: "The Catholics and the Baptists have perverted the teachings of Christ. Worshiping their version of Christ could be considered by some to be as bad as worshiping Satan."

Killer Wolf: "My version of an old blues song about a guy who wolfs around the door of every girl in town. An old braggin' blues."

Tired Of Bein’ Alive: "Self-explanatory."

I'm The One: "About a guy realizing his destiny. Another blues song. If you listen to them, all of my records have a bluesy feel to them. They're crazy and wild but also bluesy. Probably more on this record than ever before though."

Her Black Wings: "About women to the 10th power."

Devil's Plaything: "Control over another person."

777: "Armageddon. What exists after 666? The end."

Blood & Tears: "A girl's failed relationship and her subsequent torment."

Girl: "Sex to a new plateau."

Pain In The World: "The birth of Evil and its place in this existence."

Lucifuge Rocks!

All the Danzig albums are really good, even tho I am not a huge fan of the Luciferi. Anyway, iTunes has the Misfits and Danzig....WHERE THE HELL IS SAMHAIN???

John Lee Hooker grooves meet Satan

This album reminds me of old John Lee Hooker boogie intermingled with some great metal. A necessary addition to a metal head's collection though it is a bit inconsistent

Biography

Formed: 1987

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

During his time in the seminal hardcore band the Misfits, vocalist Glenn Danzig displayed a fascination with outlandish, graphic, often gory imagery; in forming the more heavy metal-oriented band Samhain, Danzig's lyrics delved into typical metal subject matter, but took the concept of darkness to an extreme. After the demise of Samhain, Danzig formed his own eponymous band with Samhain guitarist John Christ, ex-Rosemary's Babies drummer Eerie Von on bass, and longtime hardcore drummer Chuck Biscuits...
