Album Review

Classically trained composer and pianist Ryan Lott takes the anticon-approved electronic route on At War with Walls & Mazes, which he performs under the name Son Lux. Combining samples with electronic and live instrumentation, Lott writes sad, lush music that never forgets its sense of composition and melody. The most interesting songs are those in which he plays with the mix, letting his vocals fall under the layers of strings and chopped bleeps — like in the lovely "Stand," which erupts suddenly into female operatic vocals, drum rolls, and lots of piano while the line he'd been singing since the beginning ("You stand between my and all my enemies") fades distantly away. Musically, although his pieces are more successful as background music than actual songs, Lott is certainly talented, and At War with Walls & Mazes is an ambitiously detailed and delicate album, although not entirely unique.

Abstract, Definitive, Beautiful

This album does a wonderful job of embodying abstractness and definition at the same time. Some of the simpliest lyrics are presented with hauntingly beautiful melodies (that you may find yourself singing over and over again later) while its music flits from sound to sound and genre to genre. You may find yourself easily starting this album over by the time it is done.

simplicity done well.

"At War With Walls & Mazes" is one of the most addicting/eerie/relaxing albums I've listened to in a very long time. If you are looking to get a taste of this artist, I suggest listening to "Stand." This song never fails to send a shiver down my backbone.

Proper Listening Required

NPR listeners voted this album the number one unheard album of 2008 and after a couple of listens, it is easy to hear why. I did not download this album for several weeks because the short soundbytes you get on iTunes just made it seem to dark for my taste and certainly too dark for the holidays. However, I am definitely glad I did, because one you start listening to this album, you will realize that dark is NOT what this album is...it really is a hopeful and inspiring. While most of the tunes are mellow, it's really best listened to failry loud. The music is too good to simply have play in the background. It demands a proper listening. The mixture of sounds, instruments and background vocals is a completley fresh style that audiophiles and music buffs will appreciate. The music is complex, but not overwhelming, while the lyrics are suprisingly simple and repetative, yet provoking. They somehow suit the music in such a way that they do not become annoying. The beats and tempos are complex and morph throughout the course of each song. The compositions of the songs are untraditional and just when you think a song has wrapped up, another re-incarnation strikes up, with a new mood infused. It really is brilliantly done. AND, most importantly, this is one of the rare albums I have not gotten tired of after only a few plays. It's one of my top picks for the year as well. Already looking forward to hearing more from them.
