iTunes Review

Turning away from the self-analysis of his last few releases, musician and lyricist extraordinaire John Darnielle returns to telling other people’s stories here, shading them in a wide range of aural tonalities. The heartbreaking story of new parents in “San Bernardino” is told over unadorned, willowy cello parts and gently plucked strings, but “Lovecraft in Brooklyn,” about the famed writer’s xenophobia, seethes with emotional confusion while guitars zig and zag like a garage band trying to find its sound. Bonus track “Toolshed” may be a first-person story, one in the flow of confessionals released by Darnielle after his stepfather died.  Either way, it’s bitterly heartwrenching. Collaborating once again with Peter Hughes and Franklin Bruno of Nothing Painted Blue, Jon Wurster of Superchunk, cellist Erik Friedlander, and producers John Vanderslice and Scott Solter, Darnielle has found a sound that retains the charm of his earlier, more primitive works, while allowing him to take advantage of the 4AD aesthetic that makes everything from the album packaging to the music inside shiny and beautiful.

Very good.

by Sir Asher Reginald Wycoff III, Esquire

It's so nice these days to see solidly produced music that's also well-written. Heretic Pride is one of those rare modern albums that uses contemporary instrumentation, and is still intelligent. Songs like "Autoclave" and "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" make fantastic analogies that help tremendously to clarify the point of the song. In addition, "New Zion" and "Heretic Pride" deal tactfully with religion, while songs like "So Desperate" and "How to Embrace a Swamp Creature" cover the more uncomfortable aspects of romance. The bonus track "Toolshed" is based off of an infamous line from the reversed version of "Stairway to Heaven," and reworks it into one of the more haunting songs produced by The Mountain Goats so far. Overall, this is a fantastic album, and I would definitely recommend it.

Heretic Pride, Resplendent

by Fuse_me_to_jazz

The more I listen to these songs, the layers peel back exposing bare bones craftsmanship and expert decision making to integrate cello, violins with each song, while masking it in downbeat or up beat drum tempos whether it is Michael Myers Resplendent, with it's mellodic lyrics and cello accented by a hard pop sounding drums, or the paranoid sounds of screaming guitars with garage-band drums. Though each song stands on it's own, they serve as vignettes of the larger musical narrative of Darnielle's talents as a singer/songwriter and the emotional journey of misfits, freaks and the disfunctional and to find their "Heretic Pride."

greg the bunny is an idiot

by oofclot

So i only reviewed this and gave it 5 stars (even tho i think its 4 star worthy) because greg the bunny gave this album only one star. I hate people who do that. If you like music similiar to The mountain goats and just dislike this album then i would understand the poor rating. Your well informed in the genre thus your opinion is relevant. However greg the bunny is not an indie music fan. I mean come on, the guy listens to anberlin and actually LIKES nickelback.....why is a nickelback fan listening to the mountain goats and bagging on the? Please dont listen to his opinion. if someone likes nickelback please dont ever listen to their opinion. This is a great cd by a great creative band, enough said. click yes if you agree, just to prove the pompous greg the bunny wrong.

The Mountain Goats are one of the more unusual bands to find shelter under the ever-expanding umbrella term of indie rock. Hyper-prolific and militantly lo-fi, there are over a hundred Mountain Goats songs scattered across compilations and label samplers, most of them recorded (by choice) on a department-store...
