iTunes Review
Since original drummer Bill Berry left the band in 1997, R.E.M. have been a very a different group. Their albums turned inward, contemplative, experimental, and moody, rarely setting aside the time to rock. With 2008’s Accelerate, their first studio album in four years since Around the Sun, they are recharged and ready for the road. Reinforced with ex-Ministry drummer Bill Rieflin and extra guitarist Scott McCaughey, the remaining trio breathe new life into their musical and political passions. “Living Well’s the Best Revenge” begins on an urgent note, the guitars snarling while Michael Stipe defiantly reclaims his spokesman mantle declaring “The future is ours and you don’t even rate a footnote.” Other supersized rockers, “Mansized Wreath,” “Horse to Water,” and “I’m Gonna DJ,” further celebrate the band’s newfound aggression. Even the downcast numbers, the post-Katrina exile of “Houston,” the ominous foreboding of “Sing for the Submarine,” are fueled with underlying fuzztones amidst the acoustic guitars and sublime backing harmonies from bassist Mike Mills, who resumes his role as the album’s gentle organizer. A welcome return.

R.E.M. is back to their roots!
by Podcast GuruThis is the R.E.M. I grew up with. Rocking with passion and feeling!
A must have for any fan.
Not The Best, But Excellent!
by Draggin' The LineAs the title mentions, this is a VERY good album, but is NOT their best work. Living Well Is a great song, very fast and rocking with a killer chorus. In my opinion, The Best on The album. Man sized wreath seems to be just a tad slower than Revenge, anyway another great song. We continue on to Supernatural, basically the same stuff above applies to this one. When Hollow Man kicks in, if you have heard Around The Sun, the first thought that goes through your mind is "Here We Go Again..." But very quickly it picks itself up and becomes (IMO) an instant R.E.M. classic. Houston is the first completely slow song on the album, but still manages to be one of the better songs. The title track returns to the pace set by Living Well. Not really much more to say on that one. Until the day is done sounds like houston, to some degree. We kick back in with Mr. Richards which is arguably the most upbeat rock song on the album. Sing for the submarine is in my opinion the most forgetable song on the album, but still good. Horse to water is unlike anything else on the album. I just don't know how to describe it. I'm gonna DJ is just a a fun little outro to the album. Now to The Bonus tracks: I personally don't care for Redhead Walking, but if hesitant, buy it anyway. Airliner is a kinda of 60's surf rock instrumental, sounds a little like White Tornado. As for the live stuff, what can I say: they're live songs.
Another Masterpiece
by ModRocker13Me and my dad both love R.E.M. and he got this album last year for his birthday, and we love it. My favorite songs are the agressive "Living Well Is The Best Revenge" and the fun sounding "Man Sized Wreath." Sometimes I find myself pondering Michael Stipe's lyrics, and I think "Well, I don't have to, I can just enjoy..." But it makes me wonder when I listen to each song, "What is Michael Stipe thinking in each song when he sings?" I'd like to know because he is very original in his work.
