iTunes Review

The fifth album from husband-wife duo Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel may well be a reflection on how life rearranges itself when certain events occur — they now have two small children— or it may be a statement on artistic evolution. Longtime fans may miss the edgier, more experimental side of the duo, which gives way here to a more polished, radio friendly Mates of State. But patience and a closer listen reveals Re-Arrange Us to be full of quirks (ok, subtle quirks) and ripe, full-bodied music that rewards the listener. Like fellow indie duo Fiery Furnaces, M.O.S. are capable of truly intelligent songwriting and poetic lyrics, while offering up hooks that carry unique twists. Yes, there’s no good reason radio shouldn’t jump on “My Only Offer” with Gardner’s lilting, looped piano bits (her organ infatuation seems to have morphed into piano affection), or even the loping and broody “You Are Free.” Hammel’s drums pull you in on “Now,” and Gardner’s insistent chorus, repeating the word, keeps you riveted, right through the multi-tracked, Abba-esque refrain at the end.  Being radio-friendly is nothing to be ashamed of. Nice work, Mates.

Addictive, pop-py fun that sticks in your head, in a good way

I'm new to Mates and have quickly grown to love them (thanks to their inclusion on This American Life's 'What I Learned from Television" 2008). Downloaded a few songs and can't stop listening to them! 'My Only Offer' and 'The Re-Arranger' are tops on this album, but don't let that stop you from wading into others. This album probably holds their best collection to-date.

Not dissapointed!

This album reinforced my respect and affinity for their music. The progression is natural and has "the same charm from way back when." I've been listening to this band for the past 6 yrs and it's nice to see that they've matured over time, as have I... :)
