iTunes Review

Will Oldham (nee Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) is no stranger to musical eccentricity, nor to bursts of emotional nakedness lesser men might find embarrassing. Lie Down in the Light finds our hero feeling more at ease; a hopeful outlook has replaced a bleaker view. The memorable “Easy Does It” has all the charm and lilting melody of a summery kid’s song, with a rather Grateful Dead-ish spirit infusing the swirling violins and jangly guitars. The fiddles are in a darker Americana vein on “You Remind Me of Something,” although the song moves in and out of the light with lyrics like,  “you remind me of something, a song that I am / and you sing me back into myself.” Of course, there are a few classic Oldham moments, and by far the most moving is one of three very strong opening tracks, “So Everyone,” an expression of boyish sexual desire and boastfulness with a powerful emotional core. There’s a musical maturity here, as if Oldham has grown into the artist he’s been striving to be all these years. Lie Down is lush with woodwinds, pedal steel, piano, banjos and even jangling bells, and most every moment feels like a natural fit.  Oldham’s foray into ‘60s psych-folk works well on several tracks, but his affinity for honest, simple, Appalachian-rooted music is as strong as ever.

Excellent Album, great writing

by Christian-stone

At first listen I wasn't blown away, but after a few listens I have found this to be a really beautiful album. In comparison, the album doesn't have some of the complexity and depth that is so powerful in The Letting Go, but I think the words are excellent and sounds really mature and whole as a collection of songs. Seems hes grown personally, or found some peace and truth and the music is really coming out of 'a good old time feel' (~or some similar line that he says in the later tracks).

He is an excellent artist, and this is definitely worth listening to. I wait for the newer album too...

Still corrupted tracks

by Artooie

As noted before, there are "skipping" sounds corrupting tracks 4 (shortly after 1:50) and 8 (shortly after 0:50), and slightly less egregious, but still there just after 0:24 on Track 1. What the heck? If I've had a CD bouncing around in my car for a year this might be expected, but the actual downloaded tracks are corrupted? Pitiful (meaning non-existent) quality control. Fix it dang it!!!!!

Does he have a woodshed ... ?

by comet9

...because it'd be great for running through the songs he intends to record. Some really nice songs and sounds here, but the neglect in accurately rendering the vocals (melodies as well harmonies) strikes me as as disrespectful, or at the very least a faked under-sophistication. Still, nice atmosphere. I'll listen more and maybe come to a forgiving place.

After his stints performing as Palace, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, and under his own name throughout the '90s, by the end of the decade Will Oldham seemed to finally settle on the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker as the main outlet for his work. Regardless of the name he used to release his music or...
