iTunes Review

Though he made his greatest impact as an anxious young man leading the mod-influenced Jam, Paul Weller has never stopped exploring the music’s history while pushing forward with touches of jazz, folk, Brit-Pop, and soul. With 22 Dreams, his expansive 2008 collection, Weller celebrates his 50th birthday with a panel of star collaborators, from Blur’s Graham Coxon and Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, to Soft Machine’s Robert Wyatt and Noonday Underground’s Simon Dine (who co-wrote a handful of the tunes). Stylistically, Weller jumps all over the genres, beginning things as a British folksinger with “Light Nights” before breaking out the band for the title track. He hits the piano for the lonely soul ballad “Invisible,” turns jazz singer for the nightclub spaghetti western drama of “One Bright Star,” turns in a number of Curtis Mayfield soul-inspired tunes (“Have You Made Up Your Mind,” “Empty Ring”), tributes jazz pianist Alice Coltrane with the funky swamp-noir instrumental pulse of “Song for Alice,” adds some dance beats for “Echoes Round the Sun,” and recites some mystical spoken word (“God”). Weller’s a genuine renaissance man.

17 Dreams and a couple of nightmare's!!!

by DJ Genesis John

On awhole it's a very good album, with some great songs. Most of the 22 dream(songs) are very good, with great lyrics and some intersting arrangments. It's rock, it's jazz, it's folk, it's soul, it all thrown together in a mixing bowl and some amazing sounding songs come out. The first 17 songs for me, where a dream to listen too. After that it kinda turned in to abit of a nightmare, and the songs were not as good. Sea Spray was ok and rip the pages up was also alright. That said, on awhole still a great album and Paul Weller is still amazing as always

Ugh...STOP!

Just because he's Paul Weller doesn't mean everything he does is brilliant. I've followed his stuff since the 70's and have loved it. A Mod follower. BUT... I agree with the guy who said 2 good tracks and 16 nightmares.

Please, Paul- stop. Spend your money and relax. Ride your scooter around. Go to an all nighter.
But stop. Please.

Another Gem from Weller

A wide spectrum of styles through out the entire album. A few tunes have a very 60s feel, they seem almost nostalgic and familiar at the same time. But, at the same time, different. Mr. Weller will never be a "radio top 40" artist here in the States, and I really don't think he cares to be. Having downloaded and listened to 22 Dreams many times already, I think this will easily become one of my favorite albums he's released.
There is one thing about Paul Weller that cannot be said of many other artists today... He doesn't churn out cookie-cutter songs or anything similar to any of his earlier solo work, songs from The Jam or The Style Council. Each new album he releases has it's own feel and style. For those who get bored listening to "same sounding songs" from other artists, 22 Dreams will be a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.
