iTunes Review

Brooklyn’s Ratatat have managed to create their own brand of electronic music by manipulating some basic “rock” sounds into something that's uniquely their own. Animated guitars and assorted synths and keyboards (including a Mellotron) bend and whoosh, sometimes moving like a Kraftwerk-ian ride on the autobahn, at other times rising and dipping like a rickety roller coaster. On LP3 (yes, their third studio outing) duo Mike Stroud (guitar) and multi-instrumentalist Evan Mast keep the beats flowing with few new moves, but with plenty of devotion to their old ones. The album has a wide assortment of playful textures and ethnic flourishes: there’s a bit of Spain on “Mi Viejo,” and the downtempo “Flynn” glides along on a reggae/dub rhythm while the lively “Mumtaz Khan” exudes a vaguely Middle Eastern vibe. “Gypsy Threat” is great fun, with an assortment of sounds creating a bed of rhythm cleverly layered with a loop of soft vocals. There’s even — gulp —a vocoder on the otherwise groovy “Falcon Jab.” Peppered throughout are tablas tracks, arpeggios of video game bleeps and blips, and even acoustic guitar. This is electronic music with a pop heart.

Quality is a little lacking

Let me start of by saying I LOVE RATATAT. I bought heir first album several days after it was first released and have been hooked ever since, yet this album feels pushed and contrived. Not to say i don't love it, i do, but the insane bass/guitar solos that come out of no where is missing. All these songs feel like Tacobel Canyon and Montanita (my personal favorite) combined, which is not am insult, I am just stateing that this album lacks the variety, unpolished sound we all know and love so much.

pleasant but not poignant

I thought with time this album would grow on me, but even after repeated listens it's never given me the same satisfaction, and occasional goosebumps, as Ratatat's first two albums, especially the latter. The iTunes review for "Classics", that second LP, describes it as a melancholy soundtrack for a film in which the characters cannot smile. You listen to its tracks and are filled with emotions ranging from exhilaration to rage to despair. Whereas this CD seems almost uniformly to be just a collection of interesting sounds, as if the musicians weren't trying to convey any particular moods but just tossing in whatever struck their fancy and hoping we liked it. Feels rather like an interstitial album made from the leftovers of previous work.

right at that

I swear their albums are soundtracks to bleach three story arcs
