iTunes Review

The Silver Jews’ David Berman is not for everyone; his deadpan delivery makes Leonard Cohen sound like an accomplished singer. In the past, Berman’s backing band has often sounded as if they were recorded in the supply room closet of a local office building, and the modest country-rock has shuffled like one of its legs is asleep. For Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, Berman and Co. have brightened the sound (“My Pillow is the Threshold”) and even show levels of rhythmic complexity and instrumental dexterity (“San Francisco, B.C.”). There’s still a shambling quality to their attack and Berman’s quirky charm remains in his odd, literate observations that come spurting forth at unexpected moments. “She was a no wave singer for a country act,” he offers in the unusually festive sounding “Aloysius, Bluegrass Drummer.” “What’s with all the handsome grandsons in these rockband magazines and what have they done with the fat ones, the bald, and the goateed?” he asks flatly during “Strange Victory, Strange Defeat.” Lots of weird moments to indulge in.

The worst silver jews album

by silverjewboi

I own all of the Silver Jews, Pavement, and Steven Malcamus albums and i can honestly say i love thier music but if i had found this album first i would have never listend to any of it. This album does not even grow on you it just makes you more and more pissed of about the money you spent. I would recommend American Water to anyone looking to get into them I give that abum 5 stars in a heart beat. The lyrics are a pile of crap in this one dont listen to San Fransico BC unless you want to cut your ears off. The music is pretty bad to on this one on Party Barge the use this annoying sound track of seagulls squacking to keep a beet while they say something like "Give us your co-ordinance i will send a saint bernard" over and over and over again. I love the silver jews just not this album at all

Silver Jews keep getting better

Awesome album! My one and only wish is for Silver Jews to keep making quality music like this. Jews albums evolve for me over time, but my early favorites are "Aloysius, Bluegrass Drummer", "Candy Jail" and "Party Barge". Truth be told though if you like Silver Jews, you will like this entire album. 5 stars no hesitation!

nothing stops a party barge!
