Album Review

The third album is usually about the time the law of diminishing returns catches up with a band that doesn't change its sound much from album to album. Although the sound still may be great, the performances lively, and the songs just as catchy as before, the magic can't help but fade. This is the fact behind the Capstan Shafts' third album, Fixation Protocols. Apart from a slight boost in sound quality and the occasional tinkling piano, it sounds exactly like the previous two albums, Euridice Proudhon and Environ Maiden. Dean Wells (the man in the one-man band scenario) still writes brief, punchy pop songs that are heavily indebted to Guided by Voices' brand of Brit-pop worship and raw, one-take sensibility. It sounds like Wells has run out of ideas but is pressing on regardless. Hopefully, Wells will find more of that elusive inspiration soon, because at his best, he's a fine songwriter.

Another lo-fi pop gem from the king of lo-fi pop gems

Strip all of the silliness out of rock and roll and you're left with The Capstan Shafts. No promotion. No production budget. No lengthy jams. No tours. It's just about a guy in his apartment in Vermont accessing his love for music to express himself.

If you're already a fan, then this is a simple must-buy because it picks up exactly where his previous albums left off.

If you've never heard The Capstan Shafts before, this album is as good of a place to start as any of his 17 albums. Packed with infectious hooks, Dean Wells boils his songs down to the bare essence...a thought to convey, a melody and a beat. In fact, once you spend some time listening to his albums, you start to wonder how we ever got to formulaic four-minute rock song. Why do we need a bridge? Why do we need a coda? What's the purpose of a lengthy noodling solo jam session? All we really need is an interesting thought and something that makes our head bop up and down for a minute. That's exactly what Wells delivers over the 22 tracks of Fixation Protocols. Enjoy.

Biography

Years Active: '00s

The Capstan Shafts is the guise prolific songwriter Dean Wells has been recording under since 1999. Hailing from Lyndonville, VT, Wells has most often been compared to Guided by Voices' Robert Pollard, and with 18 releases in eight years on various labels, the association could stem from his productivity...
