iTunes Review

21st Century soul doesn’t get much more imaginative than Maiysha’s This Much is True (2008). This supple-voiced Brooklynite isn’t afraid to broaden the familiar R&B sonic palette by adding rock, blues, and jazz tones as the mood strikes her. In tandem with producer/multi-instrumentalist Scott Jacoby, she invokes the eclectic tradition of Stevie Wonder, Maurice White, and similar Old School masters. Tunes like “Over My Head,” “Orbit” and the absolutely infectious “Chase” combine a playful intelligence with erotic sizzle. Her willingness to confess abject need (shown most potently in “Hold Me”) is balanced by a keen-edged wit and satiric touch (heard on the show biz send-up “Celebrity” and the consumerist commentary “U.S.H.”) The tracks are enriched by unexpected elements, like the ’30-style Latin groove of “Gods” or the rococo vibe of “Alchemy.” The biggest eye-opener here is a live, delta blues-style cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” showing off Maiysha’s ability to fire up a crowd. This Much is True is sophisticated stuff, yet never sacrifices its earthiness for mere technical finesse.

Progressive soul moves R&B forward

by hyperbolium

The debut from this Brooklyn-born soul singer/songwriter covers a lot of musical ground, Even the album’s Grammy-nominated lead-off single, “Wanna Be” covers a lot of musical ground in its four minutes. There’s the requisite deep bass and synthetic beats to give your woofers a workout, and the vocals range from intimate crooning to melodic rapping and fierce soul power, but these basics are interwoven in shifting textures and tempos with operatic backing singers, drums, rock guitars, horns and more. It’s a canny blend that evokes ‘70s R&B artists like Labelle, Natalie Cole and Earth, Wind & Fire without surrendering to the sort of retro vibes pioneered by Amy Winehouse. Producer Scott Jacoby has aptly labeled his mix “progressive soul” to encompass both its classic roots and its motion forward. Twelve of the album’s tracks were co-written by Maiysha and Jacoby; the closer is a superb country soul reworking of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” recorded live in New York City, with Marc Copely’s scorching slide guitar a stand-out beside Maiysha’s supercharged vocal. If you’re looking for the melodic vocal chops that rap’s forgone, but aren’t ready to swap beats for the mellow slow-grooves of the Quiet Storm, check out the spark Maiysha’s injected back into contemporary soul music. I AM OVERWHELMED! Seriously, I did not even know Maiysha existed, I know now. This is my first review ever on ITunes. I thought it was necessary to express how blown away I am at her voice, musical delivery, and lyrics...Though I mentioned the lyrics last it is actually first to me, however the voice and music are the incentive to keep you listening and I did! So for the next person who stumbles in, after you hear one track you will understand why I felt compelled to write. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS MAIYSHA for Blessing Us with your Talent! PEACE
