Album Review

What does the popular Christian rap duo need to Reiterate at this point in their career? Well, judging by the sound of their eighth album, quite a lot. Grits seem intent on proving themselves all over again now that they have left Gotee Records. The artistic independence brought on by that move seems to have had quite an impact, as this is some of Teron Carter and Stacy Jones' best work in their 15 years together. The lyrics are carefully connected, while their Southern-style rap draws from contemporary rap artists Lil Wayne and T-Pain and then takes a serious sidestep to the '80s new wave sounds of Depeche Mode and Duran Duran. You really have to hear it to believe it, but the formula pays off big time. Together with a list of surprising guests — Dan Haseltine (Jars of Clay), Mac Powell (Third Day), Martha Munizzi, and Britt Nicole — the album's power rap is perfectly balanced with soul and rock influences. Anyone who has followed Grits over the last decade will enjoy this offering.

I cant beleive 20 years later I am hearing the same old arguements. We all want to walk as straight of a Christ centered line as we can and I beleive Grits is doin just that. This discussion is the same I am hearing when you first heard of Christians doin metal in the 80's. How much God-speak is enough for it to be real to Christians and relevant to the world? Anyone who knows Grits know they speak of the Lord often. Their is no specific formula for a Christian song and you folks who disagree are walking awfully close to legalism. Certain artists wrote incredible inspired music to God without lyrics such as Johanne Sebastian Bach. Back then one could try to make the arguement that certain chords were not Christian. The subject of music has always been a very difficult subject and when Christians are in the midst of it, the difficulty grows exponentially. Be careful brothers and sisters.

There is someone at my church whose dad was a previous pastor there. As our current pastor is on sabbatical, he filled in during the month of August. I remember three points he made on music. One will be discussed later but the other two I will discuss now. One of them was the fact that not all contemporary music was bad. When Moses’s sister wrote the songs the Jews sang after coming out of the Red Sea, that was contemporary. The word “contemporary” is not bad at all. It means modern and is applied to as modern Christian music. I do not remember the other point I wanted to discuss but it very well went along with this. The third point was tied to one of his sermons which will be discussed in a later review.

This album sounds worst than Skillet, other than the last track. Even the conservative songs rock out.

I intended to post the above review but I read some of the reviews. Well, here are my replies…

To the top two reviewers, your arguments are weak and pathetic. Rap is a music style that supports sex, drugs, and rebellions. That’s why those people listen to it. Making it Christian will not change a thing. Read the Bible and you will find this to be true.

To the critics, you are idiots. I don’t care how Christian their lyrics are. Either way, they are wasting their time trying to rap for Christ. Both GRITS and Lecrae have issues to resolve. In all, I want us to get along and use appropriate music styles.
