iTunes Review

Tricky — born Adrian Thaws in the Knowle West section of Bristol, England — made some of the most riveting pop music of the ‘90s. Trip-hop classics like Maxinquaye and Pre-Millennium Tension were dark, atmospheric works imbued with a sense danger and eroticism. Tricky is an elusive figure in some ways: he often spotlights other singers while he quietly intones below them, and stylistically he can be a bit of a shape-shifter, albeit one who puts his own stamp on everything he touches. 2008’s Knowle West Boy, his first album in five years, kicks off with “Puppy Toy,” a 21st-century blues featuring vocalist Alex Mills and a chorus that blasts like a radio hit. A couple of tracks, “Bacative” and “Baligaga” showcase Rodigan Morgan toasting over Dancehall-based grooves, while “Council Estate” is a slice of fractured punk. Some of the better cuts — “Past Mistake,” “Coalition,” and “Far Away”— use strings to great textural effect. The standout “Joseph” is tough to categorize. It’s an edgy, ambient piece flecked by harp tones that feels like it’s about to explode but never quite does; instead, it savors every drop of tension it so successfully creates.

This is his best

Been listening to Tricky and Massive Attack for 12+ years. This is Tricky's best album--hands down. His voice is clear, distortion is great, and sound effects awesome. Just buy it.

Definitely a good release.

I like this album; it's really listenable. Let's just say I didn't find "Vulnerable" to be a great album. In fact, I was quite lost with Tricky when Martina Topley-Bird left his side. While this disk is no Maxinquaye, Angels, or Pre-Millenium, it's a nice marraige of the darker stuff and the more upbeat tunes from Blowback (which I really REALLY loved, oddly). It's nice to hear him playing with contemporary stylings and sounds while keeping his beat driven sensibility. It's not his best, but it's far from the worst, and is growing on me everythime I hear it.

If you're a Tricky fan and agree with my words here, I think it's safe to say you'll enjoy this album and you will not be upset with your purchase.

Excellent!

I just saw Tricky perform at the Irving Plaza, NYC, Apr. 5th 2009...and let me just say his performance was amazing! I've been a fan since mid 90's and this album is really strong. The first album is still m\y favorite, but this one feels just as intense with a high spritual feel.
Tricky is amazing live, so if you're a fan go see him.
And by the way the entire stage was smoking cigarettes...tricky don't you know the're bad for ya'!
