Those who dismissed Joshua Radin's debut may find themselves pleasantly surprised with his slump-free sophomore album Simple Times. From the first chorus of the pensive opener "One Of These Days" it's clear that he's blossomed as a songwriter. His subtlety and restraint build a delicate tension, luring listeners with clever lyrics, intricate phrasing, and sublime hooks. "I'd Rather Be With You" has a buoyant beachy groove that Jack Johnson would dig, and the country-folk tinged "You Got Growin' Up To Do" was built on the foundation of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," but some heaven-sent harmonies via Patty Griffin keep the song sounding fresher than wild mountain thyme. Along with her guest vocals, Simple Times boasts other invited inflections by Schuyler Fisk, and "Sky" gets poppy and uplifting with wispy wails from Feist-influenced MySpace sublebrity Meiko. It's easy to forgive Radin for dropping the phrase "Lisa Loeb glasses" on the biodiesel themed "Vegetable Car," because deep down we'd all love to make a friend like the protagonist of this melodic musing. Simple Times is the sound of a young man hitting his stride.

The New Love of My Life
by JenP1210I was listening to Ingrid Michaelson's new album "Be Ok" (also very good!) and at the bottom it has suggestions and "What Other Listeners Bought" and I fell in LOVE with Joshua Radin. He's so upbeat but at the same time it's relaxing. I feel like it gives off such a positive vibe and I think that's what I love most! : )

by ghoul138I picked up one of josh's albums a while ago, I likes the songs that wer accompanied with the cello and lyrically he's pretty competent. However this album suspiciously sounds like the one that I already own. Sure some of the accompanying instruments are different, finally added a drummer, and while lyrically different, all of his guitar riffs follow the same two melodies that he wore out in the album I own. Sure he twiddles differently, and adds some accent notes, changes the time signature, but still fundamentally the same...it's boring. Learn how to play more than just those two melancholy rifts and more people might take interest. If you already own another album from radin, until he learns more melodies, I recommend skipping this one.

by Eyyk78Almost a year after getting it, this album is one of my favorite albums by any artist. It's on heavy rotation in my itunes, and I think it's a combination of the melodies and the lyrics that hit home. Joshua Radin's style stays true, remaining soft, simple, and soothing. But as wonderful a singer and musician as he is, he is an equally good songwriter. I don't know if I would say that Simple Times is better than Radin's debut album We Were Here, but it certainly is not a sophomore slump. It's a captivating album, and I fully recommend it.
