iTunes Review

A welcome sequel to 2007's cinematic The Stage Names, the similarly heady fifth studio album from Okkervil River was originally meant to be the second companion disc to The Stage Names. But don't think that The Stand Ins comprises outtakes and extras that didn't make the cut in 2007. Had the album's predecessor never happened, this one could easily stand on its own with catchy and captivating folk-rooted narratives that touch on subjects of loving, losing, loneliness, and even fallen pop star adoration — "Bruce Wayne Campbell Interviewed On The Roof Of The Chelsea Hotel, 1979" is a powerful and epic tribute to the late, great Jobriath (a '70s glam rock singer whose decision to be the first openly gay rock star unfortunately overshadowed his enormous talent). On songs like the scathing "Singer Songwriter" and the biting "Pop Lie," frontman Will Sheff displays a Dylanesque knack for cutting the subjects of his songs down with a scholarly honed sardonic edge. Other gems like "Calling And Not Calling My Ex" boast gripping prose set to well-arranged and memorable song craft that's somewhat reminiscent of Scott Walker's solo works. Guitar player Charles Bissell of The Wrens and Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg contribute to the album.

O-ver-ra-ted (clap clap; clap clap clap)

First off, full disclosure: I am no fan of indie folk. Being an English major and listening to Bob Dylan albums does not make you a songwriter. Or a singer, for that matter. I partially blame Pitchfork for doling out high scores to every generic indie folk band that comes down the pike, from the National to Fleet Foxes. History will look back on this kind of music with the same disdain now reserved for disco. Where, oh where, is the next Nirvana to electrify the world with rock and roll? Okkervil River is, in its own way, as bad as Huey Lewis & the News. Sam Kinison could have been talking about "Lost Coastlines" instead of "Hip to be Square" when he said, "That's the kind of song your parents listen to and say, 'Ya know, that's a GOOD song.'" Now, as in Sam's day, if your parents think it's a good song, it's not. I would recommend some real music for fans of Okkervil River, but their parents probably wouldn't approve.

oh no! instrumentals!

I can't understand why some reviewers give this fantastic album 4 stars, and present no reason save that the three instrumentals confuse/perturb them. Firstly, they are each under a minute long. They are innocuous blurbs that serve the album's purpose well (the concept was an obsession with the pageantry of pop culture, after all). Secondly, If you find them that repugnant, skip them! you aren't playing a record, it's Mp3. If you could complain about anything, how about asking itunes to lower the price, seeing as there are only 8 songs proper? as beautiful as I think they are, they really are not worth the same $ as Calling/Not Calling or Lost Coastlines.

Solid and thoughful pop

I heard about this band on NPR and thought I'd give them a shot. I love the lead singer's voice and the writing style, working together they 'pop'. This cd has gotten a lot of critical praise although their prior release even moreso. Tracks to listen to: "Pop Lie", "Lost Coastlines," "On Tour With Zykos," "Bruce Campbell," "Singer Songwriter."

Biography

Formed: Austin, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Combining folk-rock inspirations and alternative rock sways, Okkervil River create a particular visionary sound, strongly founded on dark and profound lyrics and on chaotic visions of patterned sound compounds. Okkervil River began as a mutual project of Will Robison Sheff (vocals, guitar) and Seth Warren...
