iTunes Review

Performing as the opening act on the Who’s 1982 tour, and breaking up within the year, the Clash were in unfamiliar territory as they took the rainy stage at Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets and 72,000 Who fans. But the band’s anthemic power which overwhelmed small clubs was perfectly effective in the arena environment. This is the complete set from their second and final night appearance. As an opening act, the band strategically loaded their set to include an immediate one-two knockout punch with “London Calling” and “Police on My Back” thrusting forth with their aggressive side. From there the group were quick to introduce their various musical influences with the staggered reggae beat of “The Guns Of Brixton,” the dance-funk of “Magnificent Seven” and the reggae jam of “Armagideon Time” before launching into their hits, “Rock The Casbah” and “Train In Vain”. Clash classics such as “Career Opportunities,” “Spanish Bombs” and “Clampdown” deliver without compromise and Strummer is completely fearless, even taunting the hostile crowd.

As this concert was played a few years before I was even born, I'll never get the chance to see the Clash live. So all I have is this live album, and it's one of the Clash albums I have on constant replay. A good band shouldn't just sound good on a recording album, but just as amazing (or even better) live. The Clash are quite wonderous in these live recordings. Every song is so great, almost good enough to beat out the studio tracks. The only low point for me is "Rock the Casbah" which I guess is one of those songs that doesn't really translate well into a live performance. Considering Topper wrote most of the msuic for this song, and he wasn't there to play might have had something to do with it. But still, it's not a total lost cause. Some of my favorite high points are the "Maginificent 7" to "Armagideon Time" and back medley, "Guns of Brixton," and "Police on my Back." Obviously I'm too young to understand what it was like to see them live, but this album is fantastic, and not worth buying in single tracks. Just buy the whole damn thing.

Clash Rocks!

This is some of the best Clash music they made. On top of that the live sound of Mick Jones' raw guitar really sounds cool. I can listen to these songs over and over again and they still sound great. If your in the mood to buy just one song, I would recommend buying Spanish Bombs, Magnificent 7 or Rock the Casbah.

This sounds incredible!!!!

I saw the Clash on this Who Tour in '82 at the Oakland Coliseum. We had T-Bone Burnett opening the show and I thought he sucked, but the Clash were very well received and I thought they were awesome. This recording shows just how good they were on that tour. Stories of them being booed off the stage in NY are very depressing. Come on NY?!?!?!?! Then again, I was at REM in '97 when Sonic Youth got booed offstage and I'm ashamed to have been there for that.

Biography

Formed: 1976 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s

The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihilistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous,...
