iTunes Review

The Renaissance is just Q-Tip’s second album in the ten years since A Tribe Called Quest called it quits. Q-Tip handled the production duties himself, and this lean collection of tracks adheres to his old-school values but still sounds remarkably fresh, and even innovative. “Gettin’ Up” and “Won’t Trade” incorporate classic soul samples on songs that represent Q-Tip at his buttery best. Few rappers have a better ear, and it is to Tip’s credit that tracks like “ManWomanBoogie” and “Dance On Glass” work as well in a club setting as through the headphones of the young hip-hop faithful. Now pushing 40, Tip’s flow is as swift and charming as it was twenty years ago, and he easily sidesteps playing the grumpy old rapper, a trap that has befallen many of his golden-age peers. The Renaissance demonstrates that a lot of time and acumen can make an offering that adeptly blends the old with the new.

Ode to hip hop!

I am getting my music back in order and this cd is great ! I am a huge fan of artist such as Mos Def, the Roots, a Tribe Called Quest etc. I must say when I heard Q Tip's single Vibrant Thing I screamed " where Is my Tribe"! But he certainly redeemed himself with this one! Great and a classic!

Tip is back, and bringing a bit of the Tribe with him

When I first heard about this album finnally dropping, I really wasn't looking forward to it, seeing as how "The Love Movement" was more about swooning the ladies and "Amplified" just built upon that, I was expecting that Tip would return with a "Business As Usual" approach. I threw all that out the window the minute I heard "Johnny Is Dead". The further I got into this album, the more I couldn't stop. From beginning to end, "The Renaissance" could have very well been the best album of it's genre for 2008. I can only hope that with "Kamaal the Abstract" finally seeing the light of day, Tip will emerge not only himself as a reinvented emcee, but spearhead the entire genre to shift back to its roots, much as Tip has done with this piece, blending a more mature style of rap with experienced flow, yet somehow returning to is "Tribe" demeanor. It's like the Quest revamped. 6 out of 5 stars.

Absolutely Fabulous

I'm not your average hip-hop listener, but when I heard Gettin' Up in one of my teacher's classrooms, I had to investigate which rapper had combined such ingenious lyrics with an unbelievably catchy tune. I was pleasantly surprised when I purchased the album and discovered that most of the songs were just as good!

Johnny Is Dead is a MUST, one of my absolute favorites, as well as Official, Gettin' Up, Life is Better, and DEFINITELY Shaka!
