iTunes Review

The dramatic television series Mad Men, which premiered in 2007, has been lauded for its depiction of the advertising world at the dawn of the ‘60s. David Carbonara, who has scored a number of projects including David O. Russell’s Spanking the Monkey and the British comedy, The Guru, wrote the successful TV show’s music. “The New Girl” and “A Beautiful Mine” feature a lush ensemble sound that evokes Gil Evans’ famous arrangements. (The latter track, with its zigzagging flute and sweet horn chart, is one of the soundtrack’s standouts.) “How Many Get Sable” playfully incorporates Latin elements, while “Betty’s Ride” draws from the music of Spain. “Song of India” is a slice of light classical, the sort of sound that filled many a suburban living room back in the day. Four short tracks —“Don’s Meeting with Adam,” “Betty’s Mechanic,” “The Snows of Yesteryear,” and “I’m Not Going to Fight”— display an effectively somber touch. The delightfully frothy “A Girl Can Dream” sports a loungey sound decked out with brief, tasteful solos. And it’s nice to hear Carbonara stretch out on one of the longest cuts, the finely orchestrated “The Carousel.”

An excellent, but not a totally complete score release

David Carbonara's original score for Mad Men accents each scene adequately, never being too much or too little. Whether it's a playful tune that evokes the naughty nature of the 60's, such as the track "The Men of Sterling-Cooper" (which is essentially a suite encompassing several of these themes that are scattered about in the show), or moody, melancholy melodies the likes of "Don's Meeting With Adam" and "I'm Not Going to Fight", the songs are never overbearing and make for a great listen by themselves.

One of the most oustanding cues from the entire show, used during the episode "Babylon", is notably missing from this release; more than likely because it has been included in the Mad Men compilation soundtrack in the form of the track "Lipstick". However, there are several other cues that I would have loved to have seen included in this release, such as Peter Cambpell's theme, as well as most of the cues used in the pilot episode.

What we do have, though, is still a healthy offering of what David Carbonara has created for the world of Mad Men - consisting mostly Season 1 songs as well as a few from Season 2. The album's strongest suits are the suite-esque tracks; "The New Girl" combining most of Peggy and Joan's themes, as well as the aforementioned "The Men of Sterling-Cooper". However, "The Carousel", taken from mostly the Season 1 finale, is such a beautifully fragile piece that transcends the already amazing scene it was written for and stands alone as a brilliant piece of orchestral music. Also, as a little bonus for fans, Carbonara has recreated the song from the title credits, "A Beautiful Mine" by hip-hop producer RJD2, using big band instruments that make it feel like a period piece, though it has never, to the best of my knowledge, been used in the show.

The score is, in general, a wonderful companion to an already wonderful show; the only thing that let me down a little is the omission of some of the other star tracks used in the show. Obviously, if you're a fan of Mad Men and also love soundtracks, this is something you won't regret picking up.

a brilliant reflection of this brilliant show

This is beautifully crafted music. Just like the show, the score often strives for period accuracy--and nails it. Works great in the background of your house/dinner party/whatever in the same way that it helps set the mood of the show. Looking forward to Volume 2.

Theme Song

For the previous reviewer, the theme song is on the soundtrack to the show, not the score. It's also a song by a hip-hop producer called RJD2, who has a few amazing albums you should check out.
