iTunes Review

Ever since his Beatles days, Paul McCartney has been interested in the possibilities of pure sound. The avant-garde tape loops weren’t just the ideas of his buddy and bandmate John Lennon, but came also from McCartney’s own interest in the works of electronic composers like Stockhausen. This “alter ego” release with producer Youth (U2, the Orb) was cut in thirteen days, a track completed in each 24-hour period. The opening cut “Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight” crushes like a modified attempt at “Helter Skelter,” and “Two Magpies” follows up as a White Album acoustic guitar ballad gone awry. “Sing the Changes” could be mistaken for a U2 track with its cathedral of reverb. Make no mistake, however, this isn’t “difficult” music, just not the traditional McCartney fare, sharing more in common with modern rock bands who skewer off the map (Radiohead). “Highway” turns tribal. “Is This Love?” works on a subliminal level. “Light from Your Lighthouse” sounds like a religious jamboree recorded under the auspices of night.

Pure pleasure from Sir Paul

This album is a delight from start to finish, and on repeated listening. How fortunate we are to still have Sir Paul McCartney with us and making music of such detail and beauty! This is a gem. If you are a Beatles/Paul McCartney fan, you will not be disappointed!

I have known about Paul being the Fireman for a while now. In fact, I have the two prior Fireman albums. When I heard that another Fireman album had come out, the 1st in ten years, I was a little skeptical. With the exception of 1 or 2 songs from Memory Almost Full, I was indifferent to the album. As a matter of fact, I did not hear any of Electric Arguements until I saw Paul at Citifield (NYC) earlier this month. On my 1st hearing of "Sing the Changes", my jaw dropped. The next day, I DL the album and have been listening to it almost non-stop since (almost two weeks). Nothing Too Much can easily trace its lineage back to Helter Skelter. Sing the Changes is awesome! After that, I enjoy it until I hear Dance Till We're High. At that point, It goes to another level with me, gaining even more points with me. Immediately following that, we have Lifelong Passion - A beautiful, poetic song that demonstrates that you don't have to play "balls-out" to make amazing music. Long story short, Paul McCartney putting out Electric Arguements is similar to Jackson Pollock releasing his famous drip paintings. It is that ground-breaking... At 67, he can put anyone half or a third his age to shame. No one can compete! No one!

Biography

Formed: 1993 in London, England

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s, '00s

What would seem to be one of the oddest examples of electronica crossover was the Fireman, an ambient project concerning producer and occasional Orb-collaborator Youth plus the dean of British rock, Sir Paul McCartney. In truth however, McCartney had been involved in London's electronic and avant/garde...
