PERFECT combination of the new era of COLDPLAY

by soccer189

Chris Martin said that the Parachutes, Rush of Blood and X & Y albums were a trilogy. The Viva La Vida album is the start to a new era of Coldplay. With the help of Brian Eno (who helped U2 at their best) Coldplay has succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. With killer chords and incredible live performances, Coldplay is arguably the best band in the world.

1) LIFE IN TECHNICOLOR: no lyrics, but it's a great opening song to the album (and the concert!)
2) Cemeteries of London: Lots of nice mood changes in this song. Typical, good Coldplay
3) Lost!: is awesome. The live version is fun to watch when Guy picks up the bass in the 2nd chorus of the song. I like the lyrics "You might be a big fish in a little pond. Doesn't mean you've won, cause along may come a bigger one. And you'll be lost!"
4) 42: Another Coldplay song that starts out slow and gets fast in the middle, then ends with a slow piano verse. I like Jonny's guitar when the tempo quickens.
5) Lovers in Japan: Kind of like U2 and somewhat mainstream. This song live has butterfly confetti flying down from the sky. Nice piano at the beginning, cool music video. One of my favorites.
6) Yes: A little eerie to listen to. Chris Martin has impressive octave changes in this song.
7) Viva La Vida: Enough said.
8) Violet Hill: This sort of shocked me when it came out. It seemed kind of un-Coldplay. But it's freaking amazing.
9) Strawberry Swing: 3 UK VMAs. Jonny played the guitar the entire song without stopping (studio version). Pretty impressive, I'd say.
10) Death and All of His Friends: fun song to play on piano. Another slow-->fast-->slow song.
11) Lost? Lovely acoustic version.

1) LIT ii: My favorite song on this EP. Great lyrics, and a fantastic way to end their concerts!
2) Postcards from far away: It sounds so good. It'll grow on you. It'a a nice piano piece with no lyrics.
3) Glass of water: Piano riff in the middle is nice.
4) Rainy Day: Different sounds than normal Coldplay. Fun song!
5) Prospekt's March/Poppyfields: melancholy. Chris Martin's voice is beautiful...
6) Lost + Jay Z: Same thing as regular Lost but with Jay-Z rapping. I guess it's okay. It sounded decent at the Grammy's.
7) Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun Mix): Tap Tap version; it's a little bit faster than normal, that's the only difference.
8) Now my feet won't touch the ground: coldplay's favorite phrase. and 42 :) nice guitars.

gotta love 'postcards from far away' though, a lovely segue that should have been expanded into a full piano piece. all in all another great album from coldplay of course. for those of you who don't know coldplay or aren't familiar with the band start off with the song that made it happen ('yellow') and then go from there. trust me you won't be disappointed ;-)

I Finally Got it

I’ll admit when “Viva la Vida or Death and all His Friends” was first released, I was disappointed. I loved “Parachutes,” “Rush of Blood to the Head,” and “X & Y,” and my first impression was that this just wasn’t as good. I shame myself now for not having listened to the whole thing straight through without skipping to find my favorite tracks. I won’t do that again. Today a lot of people will download their favorite songs or the most popular songs from an album and never touch the rest, but “Viva la Vida or Death and all His Friend” MUST be treated as one song, and listened to in the correct order. It flows perfectly from start to finish and there’s never a time where it drags or feels forced. The album moves on like the aftermath of a destructive storm. It’s like a soundtrack made for any one of Neil Gaiman’s books. “Cemeteries of London” sets the mood off in a darker place than we’re used to being with Coldplay. “Life in Technicolor” is merely a short introduction that takes you to the album’s own universe which is like a dream where limitations and rules are set, but not explainable. “Lost!” is easily my favorite off the album and also my personal anthem. “Lost?” (The piano version) is just as nice and it’s a shame that it’s going to sort of fall through the cracks since it’s not on most physical copies. There were quite a few people upset about “Lost” with Jay-Z and I tried to be open minded, but it is (no offence to Jay-Z) kind of an odd combination. I’m not sure whose idea it was. It made the song almost humorous. Maybe they’ll feature the Lonely Island next. The brief piano parts in “42,” “Lovers in Japan,” “Death and all of His Friends” are more beautiful and mournful than they have been in the past. They begin to pull you under and drown you before the song quickly picks up again, faster with catchy unique types of percussion that refuse to let you sink. When “Yes” starts up, Chris Martin’s vocals get frustrated and angry as he bellows, “But, I’ve become so tired of this loneliness.” The second “movement” let’s call it, of “Yes” seems to mimic the false state of calm we give our minds in a bad situation. And all in all it’s one of the songs that stand out the most. There’s not much need for me to say that singles “Viva la Vida” and “Violet Hill,” are also stand outs. When the tune similar to “Life in Technicolor” starts up again after the brief pause in “Death and All His Friends,” it’s like an insomniac finally falling asleep after a previously maddening sleepless night. “Prospects March” is not to be looked over because it is only a bonus. The songs weren’t put on “Viva la Vida” not because they aren’t as good, but probably because they would interrupt the flow. It’s like the epilogue of a book. You don’t miss anything important without it, but it is satisfying. I usually put it on straight after “Viva la Vida” is done. Highlights would defiantly have to be “Rainy Day,” “Life in Technicolor ii,” and “Glass of Water.”

This defiantly has to be their most original defining album to date, and I’m interested to see where this will take them next. I’m not sure how they’re going to possibly beat their masterpiece with their new album come this December.
