Album Review

I don't know about you, but Cattle Decapitation certainly gets my vote for most "colorful" name of an extreme metal band of recent memory. And for over a decade by this point, the group has certainly been unleashing the fury and continue to do so on their 2009 release, Harvest Floor. Produced by a chap who is no stranger to pushing sonic boundaries for albums he oversees, Billy Anderson (whose credits include the Melvins, Mr. Bungle, etc.), Harvest Floor certainly doesn't disappoint, as it follows the same blueprint laid down on the group's previous offerings — extreme metal at its most complex and brutal. And Cattle Decapitation's gift of coming up with glorious song titles remains very much intact, as evidenced by the presence of such ditties as "We Are Horrible People," "Tooth Enamel and Concrete," and especially, "Into the Public Bath."

Unreal.

I remember seeing Cattle Decapitation for the first time in 2000 when they were playing stuff from Human Jerky and Homovore. I didn't like them at all. Their sound was much too raw for me. I didn't care for the shorter songs (many under a minute) since once I would get into it, the song was over.

A few years later I caught them on tour for their album Humanure and I was very impressed. Admittedly, my taste in music had broadened and I started appreciating things I hadn't before. I now listen to all of their albums (not hating the previous effots like I did before) but Humaure was the first accessible album for me. The musicianship was so much better, the vocals were becoming more and more inhuman...

Fast forward to 2009 and Cattle Decapitation have unleashed this album on the world. The Gardeners Of Eden may very well be my favorite song from the band. This abum is absolutely CRUSHING. I think Travis is the best vocalist in metal with the band he's in. It's just a perfect match. His vocals would be great anywhere, but in Cattle Decapitation they're exponentially better. Another reason that this album sounds so much better is David McGraw's drumming. VERY tight. They've had some problems with drummers not being able to hold their own in the past, but McGraw is in complete command on this album. (If you ever had a chance to see him live with Sleep Terror on their tour for Probing Tranquility, you know how amazing he is.)

Buy this album. While there are so many bands out there losing their originality and spewing out more of the same metal over and over, Cattle Decapitation have made and maintained a sound that is unique to them - and it's brutal as hell.

if youre looking for a good death metal band youve found it, dont let the name throw you off..this isnt like one of those same old bands..these guys are good at what they do and create some good melodies. compared to that suicide silence crap, this band definitely tops them at this genre!

Biography

Formed: 1996 in San Diego, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Over the course of its existence, the San Diego-based Cattle Decapitation has transformed from a stripped-down gore-grind side project of the arty hardcore/grindcore band the Locust to a full-fledged death metal band of their own, undergoing a confusing maze of lineup changes in the process. Their association...
