iTunes Review
808s & Heartbreak is an anomaly in the pop landscape: a nearly extemporaneous work that hews to its author’s emotional and creative needs rather than audience expectations. Precipitated by the death of West’s mother and his subsequent split with his fiancé, 808s & Heartbreak is a radical departure from Kanye’s career trajectory. Where Late Registration and Graduation presented a parade of colors delivered with a self-deprecating sense of humor, 808s is cold and mechanical. Despite its icy sheen though, the undercurrent of loss and despair comes through the strange grooves of “Love Lockdown,” “Coldest Winter,” and “Welcome To Heartbreak.” At times the album seems one-dimensional, but its significance comes as much from its concept and its audacity as it does from the music itself. For Kanye to take his art in a drastically different direction just as his superstardom is at its zenith shows an uncommon amount of courage. Though 808s & Heartbreak will not go down as the fullest realization of West’s musical talent, it may go down as the most important statement in the man’s career.

Masterpiece
by BlackMajikMany will be quick to dismiss 808s and Heartbreak, Kanye West's fourth studio album, as a gimmick, a cursory glance at it will have you thinking otherwise. Still many more will criticize the album as being just another breakup album, but allow me to suggest there's something more here. Think of 808s as a sort of portal into Kanye's inner-most thoughts, where he ends up questioning whether or not all that he's done has been worth what he's lost. And, in truth, many will step away knowing a new West. One who's happy with his celebrity status, but still has a soul.
The album opens with probably one of the weakest tracks, "Say You Will". It's not my favorite track on the album, but still makes a searing first impression. After that, the album really starts picking up with "Welcome To Heartbreak", a strong look at what Mr. West has done with his life and what he's lost on his fast track to the top. "Heartless", the second single from the album, is truly a great track, but has just suffered from overplaying, as it seems to be the only track on the entire album to some people. "Amazing" pretty much takes after its name as its description, for the majority of it at least. Young Jeezy marks the only guest who really raps on his track, and while people who aren't fans of Young Jeezy's style (including me) won't fall in love with his verse immediately, it may just end up growing on you. From there, "Love Lockdown"'s irregular drum pattern and truly primal feel makes it a standout on the album. "Paranoid" features probably the least well-known guest on the album, Mr. Hudson, who, along with Kanye, make this one of the best tracks on the album, even though it doesn't really fit the motif of the album until you give it a good listen. From there, my absolute favorite track "RoboCop" shows its artistic brilliance. This, and the track following which I'll discuss in a moment, are sort of a tech demo of what autotune is capable of if you really tool around with it. Much like the sort of chorus-y effect T-Pain applies to his voice on his albums, the static-y tones of this song are a uniquely Kanye touch to a song that takes the cake for being one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. "Street Lights" continues with the theme of truly astounding music, with the static sound of the previous track, simple but powerful lyrics, and a beat that shows what happens when a producer uses his own beats for his work, combine to make a gorgeous soundscape that is one of the greatest points on the album. "Bad News", while one of the tracks that is mostly intended to increase the number of tracks to something beyond an EP, it's probably one of the best filler tracks ever. "See You in My Nightmares" suffers greatly because of its guest appearance, Lil' Wayne. Yes, the New Orleans rapper continues his trend of poor performances on Yeezy albums in a track that ultimately ends up being the "Barry Bonds" of 2008. "Coldest Winter rounds out the track list quite nicely with, by my interpretation, a goodbye to his mom.
808s may have a darker tone than any of Kanye's old albums, but its wonderful track list proves that autotune, when done right, is more than just a gimmick and can serve as a great artistic medium. Keep in mind I'm writing this a year later, at the point when autotune has pretty much been used to the point of exhaustion. So many albums in the past year have used it as a cute gimmick and has burnt down any chance of another album which uses it for something beyond a gimmick. Yeezy, you done good.

808's and Heartbreak
by WestSideSince95I'm not heartbroken with this album. Overall, great album. Keep up the good work Kanye, I'll be wanting to hear from you soon.
Worst album eevvverrrr!
by Estabon MontoyaI DON'T CARE about what Kanye West did at the VMAs, but simply put, this is THE WORST ALBUM EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF TIME!!!!!!! I feel sorry for those who consider this music because it is garbage, plain and simple. For those who like this album, don't get mad at me for speaking the truth. THE TRUTH HURTS BUT IT SHALL SET U FREE. All of Kanye's songs STINK, and Kanye couldn't come up with a good song if his life depended on it.
This album really and trully deserves negetive five (-5) stars, but sadly this is not possible. Hopefully iTunes will someday make this possible so that I can give this album what it really deserves.
