iTunes Review
In 2001, veteran composer and pianist Thomas Newman won a GRAMMY Award for the music he wrote for American Beauty, a drama directed by Sam Mendes. Newman and Mendes went on to team up for Road to Perdition, Jarhead, and an adaptation of the Richard Yates novel, Revolutionary Road. The film’s score is centered on piano and strings, but guitar, flute, and percussion also appear. The opening track, “Route 12,” introduces the main theme on piano, as yearning strings surge above. On “The Bright Young Man” an eerie keyboard part is gently propelled by subtle percussion. “Unrealistic” starts off with a tense bed of strings before the piano joins in with the central theme, while the brief “Simple Clean Lines” features the string section handling that musical figure. The album’s longest cut, the meditative “April,” finds Newman successfully developing his musical material over a longer stretch of time as flute and other quiet elements add color to the moody track. The album also includes The Ink Spots performing their 1946 hit, “Gypsy,” as well as a couple of doo-wop classics: The Ravens’ “Count Every Star” and The Orioles’ “Crying In the Chapel.”

I love Thomas Newman, but this isn't his best.
by CellOrcaI have loved the music of Thomas Newman since I first watched THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION years ago. He has a marvelous ability at creating haunting and emotive music that usually is a perfect match to what is going on in the films he scores. I have to say, though, that the score to REVOLUTIONARY ROAD does not stand out to me as one of his better works. True, his music does fit this film well, and the most powerful scenes in the movie (i.e. the Night Woods scene and the Abortion scene) would probably been less intensely emotional without it. However, in many films Newman tends to write one or two little motifs that are then repeated tiresomely throughout. REVOLUTIONARY ROAD is one such film, and I found myself focusing on the maddening repetition rather than the action on screen. The music is haunting and appropriate for the movie, but, other than the "Night Woods" track, I would not buy this album. For people that love Newman's music, I would highly recommend the scores to ANGELS IN AMERICA, FINDING NEMO, THE SHAWSHANKK REDEMPTION, and WALL-E. These are the films where I feel Newman's music truly shines, and I was very disappointed that his WALL-E score did not get the Oscar this year; I really felt that it was the score that deserved to win. I'm sure many people will find this review harsh for this particular soundtrack, but keep in mind that I do very much enjoy Newman's work. This one, in my opinion, just isn't his best.
This album reminds me of the movie
by WilliamMoseleyAndLeonardoDiCaprioLOVERI love the movie, and Leo. But this album goes with the movie so much. I agree with what the movie is saying actually. I think it is saying like they didn't want to be like everyone else and it frove them crazy living like everybody else. Truly great.
Sounds
by Professor "REDBUG"Having collected film scores since the 60's, it's become obvious to me that certain film composers have a genius for reflecting in their music the vibe of their era. They have a unique and very original talent for conjuring up the truely magical sence of "being there" -- in ways that extend far beyond the filmic. Henry Mancini, Alex North, Jerry Goldsmith, are stand outs from the past, this era belongs to Thomas Newman.
