iTunes Review

Having dabbled in everything from to arty- to indie-rock sounds, and even classic rock and soul, Portugal The Man, on their third full-length, explore the last genre a bit deeper, this time coloring it with unabashedly psychedelic hues. The Portland, OR band (by way of Wasilla, AK) seem right at home here, due mostly to John Baldwin Gourley’s incredible falsetto, morphing chameleon-like from one style to another. He has no trouble grooving like a pure soul diva from the ‘70s on tracks like “Salt,” or on “And I,” where he starts off like a somber and passionate John Lennon and ends with layers of piano, guitar, crashing cymbals and strings pushing his spine-tingling voice to the rafters. “Never Pleased” opens with towering layers of organs and guitars, like a ’70s rock opera, and picks up steam until Gourley’s pleading vocals fade into buzzing violins which stealthily creep into the urgent freak-out of “Sit Back and Dream.” “1989” bends synth warbles, weepy strings and Gourley’s supple voice into a dramatic overture, while the stellar first two tracks burn through several genres in eight minutes flat, with “Lay Me Back Down” being worth the admission alone.

not in my opinion their greatest record ever, but 100% their best record yet that delves in to so many different facets of THEIR musicianship...for THEM. they are artists 1st and foremost, and the fact that they are brave enough to leave their label (years ago) and truly explore artistic freedom says a s**t ton about these dudes. my friends in THE PHOTO ATLAS went on tour with P.the man a few moons ago, and their praises of how rad these dudes are alone sets them apart from every other trendy, "indy" , b******t band i can think of... they have street cred with other amazing bands because they rad enough to be original... and that f*****g rules. support talent that the alternative radio station did NOT tell you about... and open your ears to GREATNESS! you're welcome. "to silently provoke the ghost" is the best EP of this year... THE PHOTO ATLAS is f*****g rad, and so is PORTUGAL THE MAN. music is life.

Formed: Wasilla, AK

Genre: Indie Rock

Years Active: '00s

There has to be some credit given for this band's name alone — co-founder John Gourley once explained it as an attempt to create a demi-mythic entity bigger than the individual members. Formed in Wasilla, AK, Portugal. The Man (yes, there's a period in the middle of their name) grew out of the...
