A recommendation

I purchased the album because I had heard some of Mr. Glass's work and though that I would enjoy it. I found that I don't like most of the songs here. Many are very repetitive and have very abrassive notes, which I found somewhat annoying and painful to listen to.

I very much recommend "Knee 1." Anything else I would say that you listen to before deciding to purchase.

Good Survey of 30 years...

The first 4 tracks are from a never heard before recording of the 1984 production of "Einstein on the Beach" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Filling out this record are glimpses of Glass' compositional career at various point and in various disciplines. The tracks from Einstein and Etoile Polaire (North Star) represent the early music, Floe 87 from Glassworks and "Houston Skyline" are from the 1980s, music from the piano etudes and transciptions from Orphée represent the more recent work in Glass' catalog which is more expressive and lyrical; it is less based of repetition. The largest piece on the record, the first movement from Glass' 2005 Symphony No.8 which in itself is Glass' most far-reaching essay into symphonic form. All said, this is a fair survey of Glass' music from 1976 to 2005 as heard in the Scott Hicks' documentary about the composer: "GLASS: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts"
