iTunes Review

A major influence on the ska-punk scene in Berkeley that eventually led to the rise of Operation Ivy, Rancid, and Sublime, the Uptones, in over three decades, have made only a few scant recordings. Their most popular item, The Uptones Live!! 924 Gilman, was a tape of raucous recordings that captured the band's hedonistic spirit in full rage-on glory. They've spent as much time apart these past few decades, but when together kick as a smoothly functioning unit. This 2009 studio album, with four original members joined by four new add-ons, is a well-produced, tightly focused collection of supple, melodically solid tunes that emphasize both the band's impressive three-part horn section and a solid rock core that holds together as steady as any veteran rock act. "I Don't Know Emilie" is a pop standout, while the band's instrumental chops are fully indulged for "Radiation Boy." "Burning Sky" represents their softer side, while "Skanking Fool," "Ridiculous" and "Get Out of My Way" express the well-ordered chaos that makes this eight-piece ensemble the perfect party companion.

The Uptones are not to be trifled with. They are bad-a*s musicians and have helped define the modern ska sound. Involved with the 924 Gillman scene in Berkeley, they have inspired countless bands including Green Day, Operation Ivy, and of course Rancid (Paul played organ on And Out Comes The Wolves and Rancid covered "Get Out of My Way" on their first album "Rancid")

This album is a long time coming. Get it. Get it now! It has it all!
